The Toyota is preparing for a major update to its line of SUVs with the launch of the new generation of the Corolla Cross, scheduled to hit the market in 2027. The model, which will be produced at the Sorocaba factory, in of the brand, the Gazoo Racing.
The new project represents a strategic step for the automaker in the Brasil, consolidating the São Paulo plant as a production hub for cutting-edge electrified vehicles. The decision to manufacture the SUV locally aims not only to meet the growing demand in the national market, but also to strengthen the position of the Corolla Cross in the face of increasingly fierce competition, especially from imported models with similar technologies.
The changes will not be limited to mechanics, but will also include a completely renewed exterior design, a more technological interior with larger screens and an improved safety package. The combination of energy efficiency, superior performance and the new sports option seeks to attract a broader and more demanding audience, keeping the model at the sales leadership in the category.
Plug-in hybrid powertrain redefines performance
The main highlight of the new generation of the Toyota Corolla Cross is its plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV), which represents a significant leap compared to the current conventional hybrid system. Combinando a 2.0 Dynamic Force combustion engine with more powerful electric thrusters, the system will deliver a combined power of 223 horsepower. Este number is substantially higher than the 122 hp of the hybrid version currently sold, promising a much more agile and dynamic driving experience, with more vigorous accelerations and restarts. The new configuration is designed to deliver not only more power, but also smoother, quieter operation in electric mode.
In addition to the significant gain in power, PHEV technology will allow the SUV to travel considerable distances using only electricity, ideal for daily urban use. The CVT automatic transmission has been recalibrated to manage increased power efficiently, optimizing both performance and fuel consumption. The global TNGA-C platform, already known for its rigidity and comfort, will receive adjustments to accommodate the new battery system and ensure that drivability remains a strong point of the model, balancing stability at high speeds with the comfort necessary for everyday life.
The long-awaited debut of the GR-Sport version
For the first time, the Corolla Cross will receive a GR-Sport version, which adds performance appeal and exclusivity to the SUV portfolio. Desenvolvida by Gazoo Racing, the sports division of Toyota, this configuration will not be limited to aesthetic changes. The model will feature a firmer suspension setup that is lowered by approximately 10 millimeters, aiming to improve stability in curves and provide a more sporty drive.
The look of the GR-Sport version will be differentiated by exclusive elements, such as bumpers with a more aggressive design, a front grille with an exclusive finish and the division emblem. The 18-inch alloy wheels will have a unique design and will be shod with lower profile tires, measuring 225/50R18, which contribute to a more direct steering response.
Inside, the sports version will also receive exclusive finishes, such as red stitching on the seats, a steering wheel with the GR logo and other details that reinforce the performance identity. The expectation is that the GR-Sport will position itself as the top-of-the-line option, attracting consumers looking for a family SUV with a more exciting footprint and a bolder look.
Design and technology: a leap into the future
The design of Corolla Cross 2027 will undergo a complete redesign to align with Toyota’s latest visual identity. The front will be marked by a new Full LED optical assembly with a more tapered and modern design, integrated into a redesigned front grille that gives the vehicle a more robust and sophisticated appearance.
At the rear, the headlights will also adopt LED technology with a new light arrangement, connected by a bar that crosses the trunk lid, a design trend that expands the perception of the vehicle’s width. The general lines of the body will be more sculpted, improving aerodynamics and reinforcing the SUV’s presence on the streets.
Internally, the technological revolution will be even more evident. The dashboard will be dominated by two large digital screens: a fully configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a new multimedia center with a 10.5-inch screen. The infotainment system will offer wireless mirroring for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as enhanced connectivity features.
The interior finish will also be improved, with the use of higher quality materials and new upholstery options for the seats and door panels. The list of convenience equipment will include an electronic parking brake, an induction cell phone charger with higher power (15W) and a two-zone digital air conditioning system.
Autonomy and practicality of the PHEV system
The great advantage of the plug-in hybrid system of the new Corolla Cross will be its autonomy in pure electric mode. The expectation is that the SUV will be able to travel approximately 70 kilometers without consuming a drop of fuel, a range sufficient to cover most of the daily journeys of most drivers in urban centers. Isso means that, for those who travel short distances, it will be possible to use the car for the entire week with close to zero fueling costs, recharging the battery at home overnight. Recharging can be done using a common 220V household socket, an important difference that eliminates the need to install a specific wall charger, making electrification more accessible. The time for a full recharge has not yet been announced, but the technology allows a large part of the charge to be recovered in a few hours, ensuring practicality for continuous use in electric mode. Para long trips, the combustion engine comes into action, eliminating the so-called “range anxiety” and allowing the vehicle to be refueled at any gas station, combining the best of both worlds.
Production in Sorocaba and the competitive scenario
The confirmation of production of the new generation of Corolla Cross in Sorocaba (SP) reinforces Toyota’s commitment to the Brazilian market and its electrification strategy. The factory, which already produces the current model, will receive investments to adapt to new technologies, including the assembly of the complex PHEV system and high-voltage batteries.
When it hits the market, the Corolla Cross 2027 will face strong competition in the electrified SUV segment. The Seus’s main opponents will be models such as the Jeep Compass 4xe, which already offers plug-in hybrid technology, in addition to the Chinese GWM Haval H6 and BYD Song Plus, which have been gaining ground with an aggressive pricing policy and a complete technological package.
Reinforced security with the new technology package
Security will continue to be a priority, with the new generation of Corolla Cross equipped with an updated version of the Toyota Safety Sense package. The driver assistance system will include enhanced features such as adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go function, more accurate lane keeping assist and a pre-collision system with improved detection of pedestrians and cyclists, even in low light conditions, raising the active safety standard in the segment.
