Google began implementing a significant change to Gmail by launching inline AI experiences, which resulted in the removal of the Gemini side panel for subscribers on AI Pro and AI Ultra plans on Estados Unidos. The update, announced on January 8, 2026 and effective January 9 for some users, aims to simplify access to artificial intelligence tools directly within the email interface. Usuários affected people noticed the absence of the panel access icon next to the profile photo in the upper right corner of the web version. The functionality remains available in the app for Android, while Google Workspace enterprise plans remain unchanged.

The company explained that the decision seeks to make the use of AI more fluid and contextual in Gmail’s daily life. Ferramentas as a summary of long conversations now appears as AI Overviews directly in email threads. Sugestões of responses have evolved to better consider the context of the conversation and the user’s writing style. Existing Recursos, such as Help Me Write for message writing, remain unchanged and have gained greater integration.

Direct integration of AI tools

The Gemini side panel allowed actions such as summarizing threads, suggesting replies, composing emails from scratch, searching for information in old messages, accessing files from Google Drive and managing events in Google Calendar.

Now, most of these capabilities have migrated to inline options that pop up at just the right moment while reading or composing emails. Isso includes extensive automatic thread summaries and improved suggestions based on Gemini 3.

Users report that the transition has already occurred in personal accounts with the new features activated in the web version.

Differences between plans and platforms

Subscribers to plans AI Pro and AI Ultra in Estados Unidos are those affected by the removal of the panel.

The change does not impact free or corporate users of Google Workspace, who continue to have access to the side panel as normal.

In the mobile app for Android, the side panel remains visible for now, indicating that the update occurs gradually and prioritizes the web version initially.

Features maintained and improved in the new approach

Help Me Write remains available to assist in writing emails using simple prompts.

The Proofread tool has been improved and offers more advanced spelling, grammar, and style checking, especially useful for paid subscribers.

AI Overviews allows natural language queries to the inbox, such as searching for specific details from old emails without the need for exact keywords.

Gradual expansion and focus on usability

The update is part of a larger Google strategy to incorporate Gemini 3 into ecosystem products, with an emphasis on proactive and less intrusive experiences.

Tools like Suggested Replies now analyze the tone and context of the thread to propose more personalized responses.

The company highlights that data processing respects privacy policies, with content from paid accounts not used for training public models.

Control options for users

Users can manage or disable certain AI features in the Smart Features settings of the Gmail.

Complete deactivation requires removing additional smart features such as automatic message categorization and package tracking.

This allows those who prefer the traditional experience to maintain Gmail without inline AI interventions.

The change reflects previous testing on Workspace applications, where direct integration demonstrated greater usefulness than separate interfaces for quick tasks.
