Mugen, the performance division of Honda, revealed an exclusive preparation for the recently launched Prelude during the Tokyo Auto Salon, marking the return of the iconic coupe with an even more aggressive and coveted proposal. Batizado from “Spec.III”, the customization kit transforms the look and aerodynamics of the vehicle, consolidating it as a collector’s item before it even hits the streets.

The initiative celebrates the return of the model after more than two decades of absence on the market, arousing the interest of enthusiasts and the specialized press. Production of the kit will be extremely restricted, with only 16 units available exclusively for the Japanese market, distributed through a lottery system that reinforces its exclusive status.

The official presentation of the modified Prelude took place in January, where the Mugen maintained its tradition of focusing on visual, aerodynamic and sound improvements, preserving the vehicle’s original powertrain. Essa philosophy has been the preparer’s trademark throughout decades of partnership with Honda, ensuring a balance between performance and reliability.

The exclusivity of the Spec.III kit

Access to the coveted Spec.III package was managed through a lottery process to ensure fair distribution among interested parties. Registration took place between January and February, with the 16 selected being officially announced in March. The winners needed to provide the base vehicle so that the modifications could be installed directly at the Mugen facilities, a process that guarantees the precision and quality of the service.

The cost to transform the standard Prelude into the Mugen version was set at 1.65 million yen, which does not include the price of the car. Installing the components is meticulous work carried out by the preparer’s specialists, and the first modified units are expected to be delivered to their owners from June onwards, marking the beginning of circulation of this ultra-rare model.

Visual and aerodynamic components

The Spec.III kit from Mugen prioritizes the use of light and resistant materials to optimize the vehicle’s stability at high speeds. Carbon fiber is the central element, present in several parts that not only reduce weight, but also significantly improve airflow around the body. Key components include a front splitter divided into two sections, extended side skirts and an imposing rear diffuser, all designed to increase downforce and keep the car more stable in corners and straights. Além functional parts, the exterior design is enriched with details that give the Prelude a unique and aggressive identity. A discreet spoiler was added to the trunk lid, and the exterior mirror covers were also finished in carbon fiber. Para complete the look, lighter forged wheels reduce unsprung mass, improving suspension response and overall agility. Decalques sides in red, gold and black make reference to the classic models prepared by Mugen, while a serialized plaque inside the vehicle identifies each of the 16 exclusive units, a final touch that reinforces the collector’s value of the project.

Sports exhaust system

One of the highlights of the package is the new exhaust system developed by Mugen. Construído in stainless steel, the component was designed to improve the sound of the hybrid engine, providing fuller bass and sportier notes across all rpm ranges, without becoming excessively noisy for daily use.

The listening experience has been carefully calibrated to be more immersive, especially when using S+ Shift mode, which simulates gear changes. Segundo the tuner, the sound remains linear and sporty, complementing the coupé’s improved driving dynamics and offering an acoustic response that the series production model does not have.

Coupe engine and performance

The heart of the new Honda Prelude is an e:HEV hybrid system that combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a high-output electric unit.

This configuration was designed to deliver an immediate response to the accelerator, combining instant torque with fuel efficiency, a hallmark of the brand’s systems.

The combined power of the set reaches approximately 200 horsepower, while the total torque is 315 Nm, numbers that guarantee vigorous accelerations and safe restarts.

The coupe’s platform derives from the architecture used in the Civic, but has received specific adjustments to suit the lower, sportier profile of the Prelude, including a double-wishbone front suspension.

The return of an iconic name

The launch of the sixth generation of the Prelude marks the return of one of the most important names in the history of the Honda, reviving a legacy of sportiness and innovation.

The new model meets a growing demand for front-wheel drive vehicles that offer sharp driving dynamics combined with the efficiency of a hybrid drive system.

Honda’s strategy with this launch is clear: to rescue the brand’s sporting heritage and adapt it to the new demands of electrification and sustainability, attracting both nostalgic fans and a new generation of consumers.

Legacy of the Mugen in motorsport

Founded in the 1970s by Hirotoshi Honda, son of the founder of Honda,

Over more than five decades, the company has built an unshakable reputation for quality and performance, participating in several motorsport categories, including Fórmula 1 as an engine supplier.

Availability of spare parts

For owners of the new Prelude who were unable to purchase the complete Spec.III package, the Mugen offers an alternative, making most of the kit components available for individual purchase and allowing gradual customization of the vehicle.
