The Boston Celtics are set to clash with the Sacramento Kings this Friday night, looking to bounce back from a disappointing home loss and prevent consecutive defeats at TD Garden. The team faces a significant challenge with star forward Jaylen Brown, their leading scorer this season, listed as questionable due to physical ailments. Meanwhile, the visiting Kings arrive in Boston under immense pressure, reeling from an extended losing streak and a dismal road record.

Boston’s previous outing on Wednesday saw them deliver one of their worst offensive performances of the year, succumbing to the Atlanta Hawks with a 117-106 defeat on their home court. This setback marked the first time since December 11 that the Celtics had lost a game by a double-digit margin.

The team has maintained a strong home record, avoiding two consecutive losses at TD Garden since early November, when they fell to Houston and Utah in sequence. Maintaining this resilience will be key as they face another determined opponent.

Boston seeks offensive resurgence

“It was one of those games where nothing worked. They were better than us,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged after the Atlanta game. Mazzulla emphasized the need for the team to move past the off-night, stating, “They played well, we didn’t. It happens. Now it’s time to turn the page. It was just a bad day at work.”

A major factor in Boston’s struggles against Atlanta was their notably low three-point shooting percentage. The team converted a mere 26.5% of their long-range attempts, hitting just 9 out of 34 shots, a figure significantly below their season average. The Hawks, in stark contrast, made 18 three-pointers, with four different players contributing multiple makes from beyond the arc. The Celtics’ starters were particularly ineffective from the perimeter, combining for only 3 successful shots in 19 attempts.

Brown’s injury concerns mount

Jaylen Brown’s presence is crucial, and his availability remains uncertain for Friday’s contest. The initial injury report listed him as “doubtful” with discomfort in his left hamstring and a right knee contusion, raising concerns about his immediate return to the court.

Brown, who leads the team with impressive season averages of 29.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, also had a challenging night offensively against Atlanta. He notably missed all five of his three-point attempts in that game, reflecting the team’s broader shooting woes. “We didn’t play to our standard, and neither did I,” Brown admitted post-game. “The team feels my energy. As a leader, I need to be better. It wasn’t my night, but the season is long, and it won’t be perfect every day.”

Kings arrive reeling from extended slump

On the opposing side, the Sacramento Kings enter Boston in a precarious position, grappling with a seven-game losing streak. Their recent road performance has been particularly worrying, holding a concerning record of just three wins against 21 losses away from home. The Kings are still searching for their first victory on their current six-game road trip.

Their latest defeat came on Thursday, a narrow 113-111 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, where they squandered an 11-point lead. Tyrese Maxey sealed the game for Philadelphia with a decisive layup with just 1.3 seconds remaining on the clock. The critical basket materialized after Joel Embiid secured an offensive rebound from a missed shot by DeMar DeRozan in the closing seconds.

Zach LaVine, the Kings’ leading scorer with an average of 19.5 points per game, returned to action against the 76ers after missing two contests due to back soreness, contributing 17 points in the effort. “These losses are very frustrating,” lamented Kings coach Doug Christie, emphasizing the team’s need for improvement in late-game execution. “We need to improve our ball movement at the end of the game so we don’t become predictable and make it easier for the defense on DeRozan.”

Previous matchup recap

The Celtics and Kings previously met earlier this season, on January 1st, where Boston secured a 120-106 victory in Sacramento. That game showcased a familiar narrative for Jaylen Brown, who, despite struggling from beyond the arc, still delivered a strong overall performance.

Brown converted just one of his nine three-point attempts in that matchup. Nevertheless, he finished the game with an impressive 29 points and 10 rebounds, highlighting his ability to impact the game even when his perimeter shot isn’t falling consistently.

For the Kings in that contest, DeMar DeRozan was the standout performer, leading his team with 25 points. His scoring efforts were crucial in keeping Sacramento competitive and within striking distance until the halfway point of the final quarter, before the Celtics ultimately pulled away.

Queta’s potential return for Celtics

In other Celtics injury news, center Neemias Queta, who sat out the game against Atlanta due to illness, is listed as “probable” for Friday’s matchup. The Portuguese big man has been a significant presence on the boards for Boston, averaging 8.0 rebounds per game, and his return would bolster the team’s frontcourt rotation.
