Prototypes of the Mercedes-AMG SL mid-cycle refresh were spotted testing at Europa, revealing the first major visual changes to the luxury convertible. Lançada in 2021, the current generation, codenamed R232, is preparing to receive a new design at the front, highlighting an unprecedented light signature in the headlights, which promises to redefine the model’s identity.
The camouflage concentrated on the front of the vehicle indicates that the main aesthetic changes will be focused on this area. The images suggest a redesigned bumper with new air intakes and a subtly adjusted Panamericana grille, maintaining the imposing presence characteristic of AMG models. The changes are expected to bring the SL in line with the German brand’s latest design language.

The development, led entirely by the AMG performance division, seeks to refine the formula that combines the heritage of a grand tourer with the dynamics of a super sports car. Esta update aims to keep the model competitive in a competitive segment, where technology, design and performance are decisive factors for consumers.
Visual changes focused on the front
The element that most attracts attention in the prototypes is the new internal configuration of the headlights. The daytime running lights (DRL) adopt a graphic design that resembles three small stars in each optical assembly, a clear allusion to the Mercedes-Benz logo. Este sophisticated detail could become a new signature for the brand’s top-of-the-line vehicles, giving the SL an exclusive and instantly recognizable visual identity, especially at night.
In addition to the headlights, the front bumper features more aggressive contours and side air intakes that appear to have been enlarged, possibly to improve cooling of the braking system and engine. The Panamericana grille, with its vertical fins, remains the centerpiece, but may receive a revised finish to complement the new set.
Improved technology and interior
Internally, the Mercedes-AMG SL should receive the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The software update will bring a faster and more intuitive interface, new graphics in the digital instrument cluster and central display, as well as possible new functionalities for the AMG Dynamic Select driving modes.
Personalization, a mainstay of luxury cars, will also be expanded. Espera saw the introduction of new interior finishing options, such as different types of wood, carbon fiber and aluminum, as well as new colors and stitching patterns for the Nappa leather upholstery.
Driver assistance features can also be improved, with the integration of state-of-the-art sensors and cameras to optimize the functioning of adaptive autopilot, lane keeping assistant and autonomous emergency braking.
What to expect from the engine
The Mercedes-AMG SL engine range is expected to be maintained, offering a comprehensive portfolio for different customer profiles. The line starts with the SL 43, equipped with a 2.0 four-cylinder engine that uses an electric turbocharger derived from Fórmula 1 technology to deliver 381 horsepower.
Above it, there are versions with the acclaimed 4.0 V8 biturbo engine. The SL 55 delivers 476 horsepower, offering a balance between performance and comfort for long journeys. Já the SL 63 increases power to 585 horsepower, focusing on an even more visceral and dynamic driving experience.
The top of the range will continue to be occupied by the SL 63 S E Performance, a very high-performance plug-in hybrid. Este model combines the V8 engine with an electric motor on the rear axle, resulting in a combined output of an impressive 816 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful convertibles in the world.
All versions are equipped with the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G nine-speed automatic transmission, which provides quick and efficient shifts, while the V8 variants feature the 4Matic+ variable all-wheel drive system for maximum grip and stability.
Maintained performance and driving dynamics
Driving dynamics, one of the strengths of the current SL, will be preserved and refined. The chassis, developed by AMG, features advanced technologies such as the AMG Active Ride Control suspension system with active roll stabilization. Este system uses hydraulic elements to replace conventional stabilizer bars, allowing independent adjustment of each wheel to eliminate body tilt in curves and absorb road imperfections, ensuring comfort and sportiness.
Another key feature is the rear axle steering, which operates in two phases. At lower speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front to increase agility and reduce turning diameter. At high speeds, they turn in the same direction, improving stability during lane changes and quick curves. Essa combination of technologies ensures that the SL behaves both like an agile roadster and a stable grand tourer.
Positioning in the luxury market
The Mercedes-AMG SL carries a heritage of over 70 years, being an icon of style, luxury and performance since its first generation. The R232 model marked a return to its origins by being developed exclusively by AMG, adopting a sports car platform shared with the new AMG GT Coupé and reintroducing the soft top and 2+2 seating configuration. Esta mid-cycle update reinforces its positioning as an elite product, designed to compete directly with strong opponents. The Seu’s main rival is the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, the reference in terms of handling and dynamic precision in the segment. On the other hand, the SL also competes with the BMW Série 8 Cabrio, which stands out for its focus on comfort and luxury technology for long distances. The Mercedes-AMG SL is strategically positioned between these two worlds, offering a unique synthesis of brutal performance, high-level comfort and a design that exudes sophistication, seeking to attract the customer who wants the best of both universes without compromise.
Details on the rear and other elements
While the front gets most of the attention, the rear of the prototype features little camouflage. Isso suggests that changes to the rear of the vehicle will be more discreet, possibly limited to a new graphic signature on the LED taillights to harmonize with the redesigned headlights.
The rear diffuser and four trapezoidal exhaust outlets, which are a trademark of top AMG models, are to be retained with minor aesthetic revisions. Light alloy wheels should also gain new designs and finishing options.
Launch and arrival on the market
Considering the advanced stage of testing, the official presentation of the updated Mercedes-AMG SL should take place in the coming months. The model will reach the global market as part of the 2026 line, with the first units being delivered to customers at the beginning of the same year. Prices should undergo a slight adjustment to reflect new technologies and design improvements implemented.
