FIES 2026 first semester applications closing this Friday for student funding opportunities

Students aiming to secure financing for their higher education tuition in private institutions have a critical deadline approaching. The Fundo de Financiamento Estudantil (FIES) for the first semester of 2026 will close its application window this Friday, February 6th, at 11:59 PM Brasília time. This government initiative provides crucial support for those seeking to pursue university studies.

The program, overseen by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC), extends financial aid to students enrolling in private higher education institutions that actively participate in FIES and maintain a positive evaluation within the Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Superior (Sinaes). This ensures that participating institutions meet established quality standards.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to finalize their submissions promptly, as the deadline is absolute. The FIES program represents a significant pathway for many Brazilians to access quality education.

Navigating the application process

The application for FIES is entirely free of charge and must be completed exclusively through the Portal Único de Acesso ao Ensino Superior. Candidates are required to log in using their Gov.br account, a unified platform for accessing various government digital services, ensuring a streamlined and secure process.

A valid personal email address is mandatory for all communications and updates regarding the application. Applicants have the flexibility to select up to three different course options during their registration and can modify these choices until the application period officially closes, allowing for strategic decision-making.

Eligibility requirements for hopefuls

To qualify for FIES, applicants must have participated in the Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM) starting from the 2010 edition. A fundamental requirement is achieving an average score of 450 points or higher across the five exam sections, alongside avoiding a zero score on the essay portion.

Financial criteria are also central to eligibility. Candidates must demonstrate a monthly gross family income per person not exceeding three minimum wages. For the 2026 academic year, this threshold is set at R$ 4,863.00, reflecting the program’s focus on students with limited financial means.

Special provisions exist for Persons with Disabilities (PCD). Applicants in this category must provide certified medical documentation, including the corresponding code from the Classificação Internacional de Doenças (CID), to substantiate their condition during the application phase.

Significant opportunities available

The Ministry of Education is set to offer a substantial number of financing opportunities for 2026, totaling over 112,168 vacancies across Brazil. Specifically for the first semester, 67,301 spots are available, distributed among 1,421 universities, colleges, and university centers, encompassing 19,834 distinct courses. This extensive offering underscores the government’s commitment to broadening access to higher education nationwide, ensuring a diverse array of academic paths for eligible students.

FIES Social: expanding access

The FIES program incorporates a dedicated segment known as FIES Social, which reserves 50% of all available vacancies. This initiative is specifically designed for students with a per-person family income of up to half a minimum wage, which translates to R$ 810.50 for 2026. Additionally, these candidates must have an active registration in the Cadastro Único de Programas Sociais (CadÚnico), the federal government’s registry for social programs.

Students who are pre-selected under the FIES Social guidelines and meet all stipulated criteria are eligible to apply for integral financing. This comprehensive coverage can extend up to 100% of the educational charges, significantly easing the financial burden for economically vulnerable students. However, if the Comissão Permanente de Supervisão e Acompanhamento (CPSA) of the private higher education institution identifies any discrepancies in the declared family income, supplementary documentation may be requested to verify the applicant’s financial situation, ensuring fairness and compliance.

Classification and priority criteria

The selection process for FIES applications adheres to a structured classification system. Candidates are ranked based on the descending order of their ENEM scores, taking into account the specific type of vacancy, their declared preference group, and the modality of competition they are participating in.

The program prioritizes applicants based on their academic background and prior engagement with student financing. The highest priority is given to candidates who have not yet completed higher education and have not previously benefited from any student financing program.

Following this, priority extends to those who have not concluded higher education but have previously received student financing and have since fully repaid it. Subsequently, candidates who have completed higher education but have never utilized student financing are considered, ensuring support for those seeking further specialization.

Finally, individuals who have both completed higher education and benefited from student financing, subsequently repaying it, are included in the classification, reflecting a comprehensive approach to student aid.

What to expect after applying

According to the official FIES edict, the results of the pre-selection in the single call will be publicly released on February 19. This date marks a significant moment for all applicants, indicating their initial status in the competitive financing process.

Students who are successfully pre-selected must then access the FIES Seleção portal. They will be required to complement their application with additional necessary details and documentation between February 20 and February 24, a crucial step to confirm their interest and eligibility for the financing.

Understanding the waitlist

Candidates who are not initially pre-selected during the single call are not immediately out of the running. They are automatically included in a comprehensive waitlist, which serves to fill any vacancies that remain unoccupied after the initial selection phase. This process maintains the original order of classification, ensuring fairness and transparency.

The pre-selection phase from this waitlist will commence on February 26 and continue through April 10. This extended period offers additional opportunities for students to secure financing, demonstrating the program’s commitment to maximizing access to higher education through its various stages.
