Intel has officially released a significant update for its wireless network adapters, aimed at improving connection stability on computers equipped with Windows 10 and Windows 11. The new software package, identified by the number 24.20.0, introduces relevant technical changes to the way devices manage switching between access points.

This update primarily focuses on resolving performance bottlenecks in environments where there are multiple networks or routers operating simultaneously. Além of the logic improvements, the manufacturer guaranteed official support for the latest connectivity technologies available on the market.

Owners of compatible notebooks and desktops can now download and install the fixes, which promise to benefit both home and corporate users who depend on an uninterrupted connection for their daily activities.

Intelligent traffic management

The main innovation brought by version 24.20.0 lies in the change in the roaming algorithm. Anteriormente, the network card decided to switch access points based almost exclusively on the strength of the signal received. With the new implementation, the driver also takes into account the channel’s traffic load.

This means that the computer will be able to choose an access point with a slightly lower signal, but which is less congested, ensuring more fluid browsing and lower latency. The feature is especially useful in dense offices or residential condominiums with high frequency saturation.

To use this functionality, the user must access the network adapter’s advanced properties in the Windows device manager and adjust the configuration according to the environment’s needs.

List of compatible devices

The update covers a wide range of hardware, from the most modern models prepared for the Wi-Fi 7 standard to previous generations that still have a significant installed base. Installation is recommended to ensure the best possible performance of the equipment.

Among the series supported by the new driver, the following stand out:

  • Wi-Fi 7 adapters: Modelos BE213, BE211, BE202, BE201 and BE200.
  • Wi-Fi 6E Series: Placas AX411, AX211 and AX210.
  • Wi-Fi 6 Series: Modelos AX203, AX201, AX200 and AX101.
  • 9000 Series: Wireless-AC 9560, 9462 and 9260.

It is important to note that older hardware, such as the 7265, 3168 and 3165 series, were not included in this package, requiring the use of legacy drivers for proper operation.

Integration with the operating system

Although the package is compatible with the two most recent versions of the Microsoft system, there are important functional differences. Full support for Wi-Fi 7, including optimized use of the 6 GHz band, requires the computer to be running Windows 11, preferably version 24H2 or higher.

Users who remain on Windows 10 will receive the stability fixes and improvements to the roaming mechanism, but will not have access to the exclusive features of the new generation of wireless connectivity due to limitations of the old system’s own architecture.

Additional features and installation

In addition to network improvements, Intel has refined “Wi-Fi sensing” technology, which allows the device to detect presence and movement through radio waves, opening doors for security and automation applications.

The installation package is exclusive to 64-bit architectures. The update can be performed manually by downloading the file from the manufacturer’s official website or automatically using the Intel support and drivers assistant, which checks hardware compatibility before applying the changes.

IT professionals recommend updating immediately to mitigate possible connection instabilities reported in previous versions of the software.
