Owners of smartphones from the Pixel line can now download the latest test version of the Google operating system via over-the-air. The build, identified by the code CP21.260116.011, marks the software’s official entry into the Canary channel, allowing developers and enthusiasts to evaluate new features before the general public release.

The release occurs after a brief waiting period and brings significant changes to the system’s internal architecture. The focus of this initial step is on process stability and energy efficiency, setting the stage for future visual implementations.

Although access is permitted, the company recommends caution when installing on devices for primary daily use. Versões beta, by nature, may present unexpected behaviors and momentary incompatibilities with banking or critical security applications.

Among the main technical changes observed in this build, the following stand out:

  • Implementation of generational garbage collection for memory cleaning;
  • Reduction in processing consumption for background tasks;
  • Optimization in system notification management.

Technical and performance improvements

The software engineering applied in Android 17 Beta 1 prioritizes operational fluidity through more aggressive resource management. The introduction of generational garbage collection allows the system to identify and terminate stale processes more frequently, freeing the CPU for immediate tasks and reducing the occurrence of dropped frames during navigation.

Initial tests indicate that these optimizations result in superior battery life, as the processor is less intensively required in routine operations. The system now allocates memory more intelligently, ensuring that heavy applications have the support they need without compromising the overall responsiveness of the interface.

New Guidelines for Applications and Multimedia

Google tightened the rules for developing applications to ensure a uniform experience across different screen formats. With the new update, software that uses API level 37 can no longer choose not to adapt to large screens, forcing the creation of responsive interfaces for tablets and foldables, with the exception only for games.

In the multimedia field, the update introduces native support for the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, increasing efficiency in compressing and reproducing high-resolution videos. Além Additionally, new camera APIs have been integrated to smooth the transition between lenses and capture modes, providing a more professional visual experience without noticeable interruptions.

Another relevant new feature is the unification of volume management through a new programming interface. Isso aims to resolve sonic inconsistencies between different applications and connected hardware, ensuring that the audio level remains coherent when switching media.

Compatible devices and schedule

The distribution includes a wide range of devices from the technology giant, ensuring that recent hardware can take advantage of the latest developments. The compatibility list ranges from intermediate models from previous generations to the brand’s most recent releases.

Devices eligible for immediate installation include:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7 and 7 Pro;
  • Pixel 8 and 8 Pro;
  • Pixel 9 and 9 Pro;
  • Complete series of Pixel 10;
  • Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

The official schedule foresees the launch of a second beta version in March, which will bring the definitive APIs for developers to finalize their applications. The stable version for the end consumer should reach compatible devices in the second half of the year, consolidating the corrections reported during this testing phase.

For those who were already in the previous version’s testing program, it is necessary to sign up again or leave the old program to avoid data conflicts. Google warns that the return to the stable, unformatted version of the device is only guaranteed until June, requiring prior backup of all important information.
