The Stellantis announced the gradual replacement of engines equipped with an oil-bathed timing belt by the Firefly family in the European market. The measure aims to increase vehicle reliability and respond to consumer complaints about premature wear in 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines. The transition prioritizes the Firefly engines, originally developed by the Fiat, produced in the Betim (MG) and the Itália, which use metal chain in the valve control. The change comes after reports of failures that contaminated the oil and compromised internal components in previous units.

The oil-bathed belt was adopted to reduce friction, noise and CO₂ emissions. However, in real use, the material degraded before the recommended change interval, releasing particles that clogged the oil pump and caused serious damage to the engine. Stellantis has already implemented warranty extension programs and free repairs for affected owners on previous generations of PureTech engines sold at Europa.

The Firefly family includes 1.0 three-cylinder aspirated and 1.3 four-cylinder versions, as well as turbo derivatives such as the T200 (up to 130 hp) and the T270 (up to 185 hp). Esses thrusters currently equip models in the Brasil, such as Fiat Pulse, Fastback, Toro and Jeep Renegade, and in the The group’s strategy envisages expanding the use of these units for vehicles under the brands Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat.

Technical reasons for the exchange

The metal chain has greater wear resistance compared to the oil-immersed belt. The system does not suffer chemical degradation due to prolonged contact with lubricant, which eliminates the risk of contamination and loss of synchronism between the crankshaft and valvetrain. The solution reduces the need for frequent preventive maintenance and minimizes the chance of catastrophic failures.

The group’s engineers highlight that the metallic chain maintains stable performance in different rotation regimes. The wide adoption of the Firefly family also facilitates integration with 12V and 48V mild hybrid systems already present in several models.

Main advantages of the Firefly family

  • Greater durability of the distribution system without dependence on oil quality
  • Lower incidence of complex repairs related to lubricant contamination
  • Consolidated production in factories in Brasil and Europa, ensuring stable supply
  • Compatibility with more stringent emissions standards, including preparation for Euro 7
  • Base for development of higher power turbo and hybrid versions

Applications already confirmed at Europa

The Firefly engines are in use in compact and mild hybrid models on the continent. Stellantis plans to accelerate adoption in volume hatches, SUVs and crossovers of the group’s French and German brands. Production in multiple plants allows you to maintain industrial flexibility during the transition.

The GSE (Global Small Engine) family, as it is also known, receives constant updates to meet environmental and performance requirements. Incoming Modelos should be the first to receive the new options on a large scale.

Preparing for future regulations

The Stellantis adapts the Firefly engines to comply with the Euro 7 standards expected in the coming years. Melhorias in combustion, reduction of internal friction and integration with light electrification are part of the upgrade package. The group intends to keep these units in line for long periods, with the potential for full and plug-in hybrid versions.

The strategy reinforces confidence in the robustness of engines of Italian and South American origin. The gradual change avoids production interruptions and allows extensive validations under real use conditions.

Expected impact on the dealership network

Progressive replacement reduces the number of complaints related to excessive oil consumption and mechanical failures at intermediate mileages. Concessionárias European companies receive updated guidelines for maintenance and monitoring of PureTech engines still in circulation. The measure contributes to improving the perception of quality of the group’s portfolio on the continent.

Technicians monitor the performance of the Firefly units already sold to make fine adjustments, if necessary. The transition occurs without abrupt changes to the assembly lines.
