Atari officially made a strategic move into the retro games market by confirming the relaunch of Disney Afternoon Collection. The new version, now under the management of the publisher, arrives exclusively on Nintendo consoles, covering both the current hardware and the long-awaited successor of the hybrid platform. The package expands the original 2017 catalog, responding to long-standing requests from fans with the inclusion of titles that had been left out of the previous compilation, consolidating the preservation of works from the 16-bit era.

Unlike the version available on other platforms almost a decade ago, this edition was treated as a definitive update. Development was carried out by Digital Eclipse, a studio renowned for its work in digital preservation and high-fidelity emulation. The exclusivity for the Nintendo ecosystem prevents PlayStation and Xbox users from accessing the extra content, keeping the old version on these platforms without the new integrations.

Inclusion of rarities and technical details

The main highlight of this update is the expansion of the library to eight games, correcting absences felt in the first collection. The titles Goof Troop, originally released in 1993, and Bonkers, from 1994, were integrated into the package.

Goof Troop is often cited by enthusiasts as one of the gems of Super Nintendo. The co-op action puzzle game pits Pateta and Max in a series of challenges that require coordination to move blocks and defeat enemies. The title has historical importance as it was designed by Shinji Mikami, creator of survival horror franchises, before his global fame.

Bonkers brings a proposal focused on speed and platform. Baseado in the animated series of the same name, the game places the protagonist in colorful urban settings, requiring quick reflexes. The inclusion of this title completes a cycle of Capcom releases based on Disney properties from the early 90s, which until then remained restricted to original cartridges or unofficial emulation.

Preservation and modern features

Digital Eclipse implemented a series of tools to modernize the experience without distorting the original games. The “rewind” function allows players to rewind the action a few seconds to correct fatal errors, an essential mechanic for older titles known for their high difficulty. Além Additionally, visual filters were added to simulate the aesthetics of tube televisions (CRT) and monitors of the time.

The documentary aspect was also reinforced. The collection includes a robust digital museum, containing concept art, digitized original boxes, manuals, and behind-the-scenes information about the development of each work. Esse material serves as a historical record of the partnership between Disney and Capcom, offering context on how the animations were adapted for video games.

Compatibility and complete catalog

Confirmation that the title will run on the successor to Nintendo Switch brings security to consumers regarding the longevity of the purchase. The save file transfer system between consoles has been secured, allowing progress to be maintained across generational transitions.

In addition to the two new features, the collection maintains the six classics that formed the basis of the original project. DuckTales and its sequel, DuckTales 2, continue to be the pillars of the collection, alongside Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers 1 and 2. Completam the TaleSpin list, with its aerial shooting mechanics, and Darkwing Pre-sales of physical and digital editions have already started on official channels.
