James Holder, co-founder of Superdry, was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a woman in his apartment in Cheltenham. The 54-year-old man committed the crime on May 6, 2022, after a night of fun that ended at the victim’s residence. The jury of seven men and five women found Holder guilty in Tribunal of Coroa of Gloucester, in Cirencester, on Friday. Judge David Chidgey described the attack as “a despicable act of sexual violence” motivated by the accused’s “sense of entitlement.”

Dinâmica of crime and events at the residence

Holder got into the victim’s taxi after an impromptu night out, despite a witness calling separate transport for both. At the woman’s house, he fell asleep in her bed, woke up and called the victim, who was trying to sleep in the living room, to his bedroom. Quando she refused, the man pulled her to the bed, ignoring her cries and resistance.

The judge described the behavior: “You ignored the fact that she was crying; it was a real nightmare for her, assaulted in the worst possible way in her own home.” The sentence requires Holder to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence in prison before any conditional release.

Victim’s Testimunha and psychological impact

The female victim read a statement to the court explaining the lasting impact of the crime:

  • The incident “cast shadows where there should have been only light”
  • Trauma haunts your relationships and ability to trust
  • Quatro years after the rape, she continues to “reclaim every part” of herself
  • Intimate connection now sparks insecurity instead of security

“I’m still here, still standing, still getting back every part of me that you tried to take away,” he said during the trial. Sua’s courage in reporting the crime and testifying before the jury was praised by Polícia Detective Elle MacLeod outside the courtroom after the sentencing.

Condenações financial and removal from Superdry

Holder was ordered to pay £5,000 towards court costs. A victim support fee was also determined, the amount of which has not yet been calculated by the court. A spokesperson for Superdry confirmed that Holder had resigned as a director and employee of the company in 2016, with his consultancy work ending in 2019.

The company issued a statement to the BBC News: “The case refers to an incident that occurred in 2022, long after the end of any link with Superdry.” Holder co-founded the fashion brand with Julian Dunkerton in 2003, consolidating himself as a tycoon in the sector before his departure from operational management.

Observação court over intent and disrespect

Judge Chidgey highlighted during the sentencing that Holder’s behavior revealed a conscious intention to violate the victim’s autonomy. The initial evidence presented to the jury demonstrated that he “called a taxi for himself and a separate taxi for the victim”, showing premeditation. Upon entering her taxi, Holder deliberately triggered a sequence of events that culminated in the crime.

“This was perhaps the first evidence the jury heard that addressed his attitude and intentions,” the judge said. The magistrate emphasized that the attack did not just reflect violence, but a “casual disregard for the victim’s absolute right to say what he wanted to do with his own body”, defining the crime as an expression of dominance and contempt.
