Portugal was elected in the first round as a non-permanent member of Conselho of Segurança of Nações Unidas. Voting took place this Wednesday on the UN’s Assembleia Geral, in Nova Iorque. The country secured one of the two places allocated to the group of Europa Ocidental and Outros Estados.
The decision involved the 193 Estados-members. Portugal competed for the spot with Alemanha and Áustria. The result confirms the country’s return to the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
Eleição occurred by secret vote on Assembleia Geral
The UN Assembleia Geral held the secret ballot to fill five rotating seats in the Conselho of Segurança. Portugal received sufficient support in the first round and secured the mandate for the period 2027-2028.
Áustria was also elected in the same regional group. Alemanha did not reach the necessary votes. Nos remaining groups, Zimbabué and Trinidad and Tobago completed the list of new non-permanent members.
The process highlighted the prestige accumulated by Portugal in previous candidacies. The country has held the seat on three occasions: 1979-1980, 1997-1998 and 2011-2012. Todas previous attempts resulted in success.
