Rio Grande of Sul advances with Aura Sul Wind. The pilot project represents the first floating wind energy initiative in the country. Japanese company JB Energy leads the venture. Investimento initial forecast reaches US$ 100 million. The installation will take place in deep waters close to Porto of Rio Grande. Operação commercial is expected to start in 2030.

The movement occurs while other countries are already operating commercial parks with the technology. França recently delivered power to the grid from floating turbines on Mediterrâneo. Japão invests in similar deepwater solutions. Brasil has high-quality ocean winds, especially in Sul and Nordeste. Mesmo thus, the country arrives late to the floating offshore segment.

Projeto Aura Sul Wind uses Japanese technology

The Aura Sul Wind provides a floating platform with a wind turbine mounted on a concrete base. The Raijin FOWT solution allows installation in locations with great depth. The chosen location is approximately 60 kilometers from the coast. Estudos feasibility studies are already underway. Parcerias involves universities in Rio Grande do Sul and local entities.

The initiative is part of the state’s Programa Portos Verdes. The objective includes decarbonizing logistics and strengthening the energy transition. JB Energy installed a subsidiary in Brasil to run the project. Pesquisadores from FURG and UFRGS participate in technical and environmental assessments.

  • Plataforma floating anchored in deep water
  • Uso from Raijin FOWT technology developed on Japão
  • Investimento initial $100 million
  • Início of operations scheduled for 2030
  • Foco in local energy production chain

França already delivers energy from floating turbines

Ocean Winds has started production on the 30 MW EFGL project on Golfo of Leão. Três turbines of 10 MW each operate on floating foundations. Electricity has been reaching the French grid since the beginning of May 2026. The park is in an area of strong winds in Mediterrâneo.

The French advance demonstrates the maturity of the technology. Países with deep waters see floating wind as a viable alternative to fixed foundations. The solution frees up exploration of areas further away from the coast. No Brasil, much of the best wind resource is exactly in these deep zones.

Vantagens of floating wind power for the Brazilian coast

Turbinas fixtures require shallow water. Floating technology allows installation where the sea is deeper. Plataformas anchored by cables maintain stability. Brasil has an extensive coastline with world-class winds. Especialistas points to significant potential in Sul and Nordeste.

The Gaucho project could pave the way for a larger scale. Cadeia industrial includes assembly of structures, port logistics and specialized labor. Rio Grande of Sul seeks to position itself as an offshore energy hub. Existing Portos offer ready infrastructure to receive components.

Desafios regulatory and environmental issues still persist

Environmental Licenciamento requires care in maritime areas. Regras clear for the offshore sector still developing in the country. Investidores expect legal security for larger projects. The Aura Sul Wind serves as a pilot to test processes. Resultados should guide future policies.

Especialistas highlight the need for specific incentives. Concorrência with consolidated sources such as hydropower and onshore wind has influenced the slow pace so far. The relative delay creates an opportunity to learn from international experiences.

Economic Impacto expected on Rio Grande from Sul

The project should generate jobs during construction and operation. Indústria marine and logistics services gain from demand. Universidades sites participate in knowledge transfer. The project strengthens the state’s position in the green economy.

Governadores and secretariats received the presentation from JB Energy. Diálogos involves Desenvolvimento Econômico, Meio Ambiente and Infraestrutura. Expectativa is to attract more foreign investment into the sector. The Aura Sul Wind represents the starting point of a new energy frontier.

The country observes the global advancement of technology. França and Japão accumulate operational experience. Outros European and Asian markets follow a fast pace. The Brasil enters the curve with an ambitious pilot project. Sucesso could accelerate offshore expansion in the coming years.
