US President Donald Trump accused Iran of shooting down a US Army Apache helicopter patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social this Tuesday (9), he stated that the United States “will need to respond” to the incident.

The declaration comes at a delicate moment in negotiations for a peace agreement in the Middle East. Trump had been signaling optimism about a possible ceasefire, even mentioning that negotiations would be in the “final phase”.

Innovative marine drone rescue

The AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed on Monday (8), at around 6:30 pm local time, near the coast of Oman. The two crew members were rescued in stable condition about two hours later. The rescue was carried out by an unmanned drone boat, in an unprecedented operation of its kind to save aircraft crews in the water, according to American military authorities.

A US military official informed Axios that an Iranian drone had hit the aircraft, but the official investigation is still analyzing whether the act was intentional. This would be the first loss of an American Apache in the current war in the region, which began on February 28.

Contrast with diplomatic efforts

Trump’s tough stance contrasts with his recent calls for de-escalation. In previous days, he had warned Israel against resuming actions against Iran and spoke of progress in peace talks.

In response to Trump’s post, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi published a defiant message without directly citing the incident. He suggested that foreign forces in the region are at risk and argued for their withdrawal, saying Iran prefers diplomacy, “but we also speak other languages.”

Parallel Israeli attack in Lebanon

In parallel, Israel carried out attacks in Lebanon this Tuesday, killing at least eight people. Iran accused the country of violating the ceasefire in force in the region. The multi-front context increases pressure on US-mediated negotiations.

The AH-64 Apache is the US Army’s main attack helicopter, in service since 1984. Capable of flying at up to 365 km/h, it can carry precision missiles, rockets and fast cannon armament. Their presence reinforces the blockade imposed by the US on Iranian oil exports in the strait, one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for transporting energy.
