Changing your iPhone lock password helps protect personal data in case of loss, theft or unwanted access. The process takes place directly in Settings, in the Face ID and Code section, and allows you to choose between 4 or 6 digit options, a personalized numeric code or even an alphanumeric code with letters and symbols.

The lock code remains one of the most important layers of protection on iPhone, even with Face ID or Touch ID turned on. It prevents other people from accessing apps, photos and banking information if the device is picked up by onlookers or thieves. The procedure remains practically the same in recent versions of iOS.

How to change iPhone lock password

Go to the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Face ID & Passcode. On models with a Home button, the option appears as Touch ID and Code. Enter your current password to proceed to the security settings menu.

In the next menu, select the Change Code option. The system asks for the old code again to confirm the owner’s identity. Then the screen to enter the new code appears.

Tap Passcode Options to choose the desired password type. You can set a 4-digit numeric (faster but less secure), 6-digit (common balance), custom numeric (any number of numbers) or custom alphanumeric (with letters, numbers and special characters) code. Confirm the new code by entering it twice.

How to remove iPhone lock code

Go back to Settings and access Face ID and Passcode (or Touch ID and Passcode). Enter the current password to enter the menu. Find and tap Deactivate Code. Confirm again with the password in use. The iPhone processes the request within a few seconds and removes the passcode lock.

From that moment on, the device opens only with Face ID, Touch ID or without any authentication, depending on the settings. Remember that removing the code reduces protection in situations of loss or theft.

What types of lock codes exist?

iOS offers different levels of security for the lock code in addition to Face ID and Touch ID. Each option caters to varying usage profiles and priorities of practicality versus protection.

  • 4-Digit Numeric Code: the most common and quickest for everyday use, but also the easiest to be discovered by close observers.
  • 6-Digit Numeric Code: adds two extra digits in relation to the previous one, increasing security without losing agility.
  • Custom Numeric Code: allows you to create a sequence with any number of numbers, depending on the complexity the user wants.
  • Personalized Alphanumeric Code: the most robust option, which combines letters, numbers and special characters, ideal for those who prioritize maximum protection.

The iPhone keeps the lock settings updated in recent versions of the system, without significant changes to the menu path. Enabling strong passcode remains one of Apple’s core security recommendations for all users.
