The BYD Seal U, also known as Sealion 6, is a plug-in hybrid SUV for five occupants that offers up to 126 km of autonomy in 100% electric mode.
BYD India has made official its intention to introduce its first plug-in hybrid sports utility vehicle, the Seal U, in the country. The arrival on the market is scheduled for the end of 2026.
The BYD Seal U, which also bears the name Sealion 6 in some markets, employs the manufacturer’s DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV system. The package combines a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine with two electric motors and an 18.3 kWh battery.
BYD highlights that the gasoline engine delivers the best thermal efficiency in the world segment, at 43.04%, while the electric motors achieve 97.5% efficiency. The combustion engine records a consumption of 20.80 km/l, while the full hybrid system allows for more than 1,200 km of total autonomy.
BYD’s plug-in hybrid set prioritizes electric mode. The electric motors are primarily responsible for traction, with the gasoline engine basically functioning as a generator to recharge the battery when necessary. The system automatically switches between fully electric, series hybrid and parallel hybrid modes, in addition to supporting the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function.
The BYD Seal U (Sealion 6) is a five-seater SUV offered in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The model delivers 319 hp of power and 550 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, with an electric range of 126 km.
