Apple’s foldable iPhone may be closer to launch, scheduled for fall, according to hidden files identified by researcher @M1Astra in the beta version for developers of iOS 27. This indicates that, when the company presents its new hardware in September, consumers may finally get to know the foldable version of the smartphone.

Although Apple does not yet offer foldable phones on the market, the iOS 27 code contains references to “foldState”, “mechanicalAngleDegrees”, “angleDegrees” and “MGGetLogicalDeviceDisplayCount”. These terms suggest that the operating system can identify whether the device is folded, the opening angle and the number of screens in use. The conclusion is that a possible foldable device would be compatible with iOS 27, presented at the WWDC keynote on Monday.

Although Samsung and Huawei, the latter banned in the United States, have been producing foldable phones for more than five years, Apple’s debut is surrounded by great expectations. For consumers, the thickness of foldable devices gains relevance, as the appeal of a second screen may lose strength compared to the practicality of storing the phone in a jeans pocket, especially in women’s clothing, designed with less space for bulky items.

Apple, however, has already demonstrated progress by reducing the thickness of the iPhone as much as possible. Last year, the company launched the iPhone Air, which is just 5.6 millimeters deep, equivalent to the thickness of about four stacked coins. In the foldable format, two iPhone Air screens would result in approximately 11.2 millimeters, a value lower than that of any Samsung foldable, except the most recent two-screen model, the Galaxy Z Fold7.
