The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued warnings for storms with intense winds and heavy rain in areas of Central-South Brazil. The instability marks a sharp turn in the weather starting this Wednesday (10), influenced by low pressure systems and cold fronts.

The regions of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina are among the most affected. Meteorologists predict gusts that could reach 100 km/h, heavy rain showers and the risk of hail in isolated areas.

Cyclones and cold fronts drive instability

Two extratropical cyclones are developing in the South region this week, combined with the passage of cold fronts. This scenario favors the development of localized storms, with rainfall volumes that can exceed 50 mm in a few hours in some locations.

The combination of strong wind, intense rain and possible hail increases the risk of falling trees, damage to structures and rapid flooding, especially in urban areas with poor drainage.

What changes in practice for the population

In addition to the winds and rain, the mass of cold air associated with the systems should cause a drop in temperature in much of the South and Southeast in the coming days. In June, more voluminous rains at this time draw attention because they occur outside the historical pattern of drier winters in several regions.

Experts recommend that residents avoid open areas during storm peaks, secure loose objects and monitor official warnings. In cases of extreme wind, the ideal is to seek shelter in safe places.

Monitored regions and alert duration

The yellow alert (potential danger) covers specific sections of the four mentioned states, with the possibility of extension to areas of São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul depending on the evolution of the systems. Instability is expected to persist throughout the week, with a new round expected between June 17th and 19th.

In the North of the country, the forecast is for isolated showers, but without the same intensity as the storms in the Center-South.
