A trade simulation involving four Eastern Conference teams gains attention in the NBA offseason and proposes a major redistribution of talent to circumvent the second apron’s strict salary restrictions.

The hypothetical proposal would send Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown to the Toronto Raptors. In return, the Celtics would receive Jalen Suggs, from the Orlando Magic, Nic Claxton, from the Brooklyn Nets, and two first-round picks from the Raptors (2028 and 2031).

The deal would also send Brandon Ingram to the Brooklyn Nets, while the Orlando Magic would receive Jakob Poeltl and Terance Mann, as well as a 2028 pick from the Nets.

Simulated exchange details

  • Boston Celtics receive: Jalen Suggs (Magic), Nic Claxton (Nets), 1st round 2028 (Raptors) and 1st round 2031 (Raptors)
  • Orlando Magic receives: Jakob Poeltl (Raptors), Terance Mann (Nets) and 1st round 2028 (Nets)
  • Toronto Raptors receive: Jaylen Brown (Celtics)
  • Brooklyn Nets receive: Brandon Ingram (Raptors) and Goga Bitadze (Magic)

The Celtics finished the 2025-26 season as the No. 2 seed in the East but face severe financial pressure. Having two players in the league’s top ten salaries next season is not considered sustainable under current collective bargaining agreement rules.

Celtics motivation

By giving up Jaylen Brown, the team would gain salary cap relief and strengthen the depth of the squad. Jalen Suggs and Nic Claxton would significantly improve the defense on the perimeter and in the paint. Although they would lose elite shooting, the Celtics would gain a more aggressive identity on the bench.

Why the Orlando Magic would consider trading

The Magic face tightness on the perimeter and need to define Anthony Black’s future. Suggs appears as the surplus to a long-term core that still struggles with shooting. The operation would bring immediate tax relief, avoiding the second apron for another season and giving the new technical command time to adapt. Jakob Poeltl would arrive as an elite physical screener, while Terance Mann would add playoff-tested wing versatility.

Raptors Perspective

Toronto would give up Brandon Ingram, Jakob Poeltl and two first-round picks, but gain an ideal partner for Scottie Barnes in Jaylen Brown. Brown would assume the main scoring role, complementing Barnes’ defensive strength and significantly raising the franchise’s competitive ceiling.

The duo would have the potential to form one of the best attack-defense duos in the Eastern Conference.

Benefit for the Brooklyn Nets

The Nets would look for a low-cost move to return to competitive relevance. Despite the loss of Nic Claxton, Brandon Ingram would bring efficient midcourt scoring and isolated creation, while Goga Bitadze would fill the physical void in the paint without compromising future salary flexibility.

This simulation illustrates how Eastern franchises try to balance competitive ambitions with the new realities of the NBA salary cap.
