Destiny 2 experienced an impressive return this Tuesday (9). The final Monument of Triumph update saw the game record 167,000 concurrent players on Steam, the highest peak in two years.

The number represents the highest point since the launch of the A Forma Final expansion, in 2024, which reached 314 thousand players. The sudden increase overloaded servers, causing instability and login queues for many users.

Fans organize “protest” on servers

The rise was not just nostalgia. An active community campaign encouraged players to join at the same time to demonstrate to Bungie and Sony the size of the fan base. The current peak almost doubled the record for Marathon, the studio’s new game, which has had no more than 88,000 simultaneous players since launch.

End decision surprises community

In May, Bungie announced the end of support for Destiny 2 after nearly a decade. The studio decided to prioritize Marathon, which generated immediate outrage. During the Summer Game Fest, players took advantage of the event to publicly demand the development of Destiny 3.

The mobilization gained strength on the networks and culminated in this week’s peak, showing that the franchise still has momentum even without new paid expansions.

Uncertain future for the series

Despite the community’s show of strength, the path to a new game is complicated. According to Bloomberg, Destiny 3 is not in active development. Bungie is planning significant layoffs and considering other projects in the Destiny universe, but high costs and financial challenges make a release before the early 2030s unlikely.

The case illustrates a common dilemma in the live service market: games with strong emotional attachment from the community still face pressure for immediate financial results, especially after acquisitions such as Bungie by Sony.
