Chelsea announced this Wednesday the departure of Richard Olise, the academy’s right-back, who will leave the club at the end of his contract on June 30. The 21-year-old, brother of Bayern Munich striker Michael Olise, spent more than a decade in the Blues’ youth ranks.
Richard arrived at Cobham at the age of nine and progressed through all the youth teams. In the 2024/25 season, he was included for the first time in a first-team game, on the trip to the Conference League clash against Astana, in Kazakhstan. For the under-21 team, he played as an attacking right-back and scored important goals, including one in the derby against Fulham.
The dismissal is part of the list of players who will not have their contract renewed. In addition to Richard, the club confirmed the departures of Brodi Hughes, Sam Rak-Sakyi and Jimi Tauriainen. The movement is common in the Premier League, where big clubs reevaluate their base squad to balance finances and opportunities.
Trajectory at Chelsea’s base
Born in London on September 9, 2004, Richard Olise represents England at youth level. He stood out for his calm release of the ball and his ability to attack on the right side. At under-21 level, he had regular minutes in Premier League 2, contributing both in defense and offensive support.
Unlike his older brother, who left Crystal Palace for Bayern for a high fee, Richard built his entire formative career within Chelsea. The release paves the way for him to seek minutes as a professional at another club, something increasingly rare for those who spend so much time at the same academy.
What changes for the player’s future
With free agent status starting in July, Richard is on the radar of teams looking for young reinforcements with experience in large training centers. Clubs in the English Championship and medium-sized European leagues usually monitor these profiles, which arrive at no transfer cost and with a good technical base.
The case also reflects the current reality of English football: elite academies produce a lot of talent, but not everyone gets a place in the first team. While Michael shines for the French national team and at Bayern, Richard now has the chance to write his own chapter away from Stamford Bridge.
