In the United States, about one in every 100 breast cancer diagnoses occurs in a man, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Just like in a woman, a man’s risk of breast cancer increases if he has the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

Other risk factors for breast cancer in men include being over age 50, a family history of breast cancer, obesity, exposure to hormone and radiation treatments, liver disease and certain conditions that affect the testicles, according to the CDC.

There are currently no screening recommendations for breast cancer in men.

Symptoms of breast cancer in men include abnormalities in the chest area, such as a lump or swelling, redness or scaly skin, nipple discharge and pain in the nipple area, as per the CDC.
