Daniele Bezerra, Deolane Bezerra’s sister and lawyer, denounced the conditions faced by the influencer at the Tupi Paulista Women’s Penitentiary. Preventively detained since May 21, Deolane reports panic attacks, problems eating and an infestation of scorpions there.
The situation gained repercussion after Daniele’s exclusive interview with columnist Lucas Pasin, from Metrópoles. According to her, the lawyer has already needed medical attention twice in the unit, with blood pressure reaching 9/6, being medicated with serum. The panic attacks worsened after Deolane killed four scorpions in a single day.
Infestation and constant fear
Daniele claims that her sister cannot stand being alone in the cell at night. The lawyer, who also follows the case legally, checks Deolane’s health status daily. On Saturdays, the mother and another sister visit.
The penitentiary, located in the interior of São Paulo, has already accumulated complaints about overcrowding and precarious structure. Deolane was transferred there a few days after her arrest in Operation Vernix, which investigates an alleged money laundering scheme linked to the PCC.
Health problems in food
The influencer also faces difficulty eating. Daniele explains that the dishes used in the unit would be inappropriate. Many would be locked in cells and used by inmates to urinate and defecate, returning to the kitchen without adequate cleaning.
According to the family, Deolane has a prescription for controlled depression medication, but the conditions in the prison would worsen his mental health condition.
STJ decision and next steps
On Tuesday (9), the 5th Panel of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) unanimously denied the habeas corpus request by the defense. Daniele clarified that the decision was procedural: the court understood that it was still necessary to wait for a statement from lower courts, such as the Court of Justice of São Paulo, before analyzing the merits.
The family maintains the expectation that a new request for freedom will be analyzed based on the arguments presented. The defense continues to work on the case and plans a new habeas corpus.
Deolane Bezerra remains in pre-trial detention for alleged money laundering and connection with the PCC leader, Marcola. The influencer denies the accusations.
