Matt Damon, aged 55, opened up about the furry family he shares with his wife Luciana Barroso and their four daughters. The actor, who plays the protagonist of the highly anticipated filmThe Odyssey(2026), participated in an adoption action and highlighted his love for rescuing animals.

The star spent an afternoon at the Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a rescue center in California that specializes in saving dogs and cats from high-risk euthanasia shelters. Then, in conversation with the website The Dodo, he presented the five dogs adopted over the years.

“We have five dogs ranging in age from 2 to 12 years old. We love rescuing dogs. They are the best,” Damon said while holding a puppy.

The names and stories of the family dogs

The animals are named Charlie, Osita, Cookie, Rudy and Scoutie. One of them gained special attention: Osita, known as the “dog of the apocalypse”. Rescued as a puppy in Costa Rica, she was just six weeks old when her family found her on a beach. Today, at around 12 years old, he maintains a strong survival instinct, despite his comfortable life in Brooklyn.

In addition to the dogs, the couple rescued a cat during the same trip to Costa Rica in 2014. The feline lived alone in the forest and ended up becoming dependent on the family after a month of care. He also had a long and happy life with the Damons.

Activism and family routine

Luciana Barroso is described by the actor as a great supporter of adoptions. Even though they live in a house with limited space in New York, the couple prioritizes providing quality of life for animals. Damon joked that he wouldn’t bet against the possibility of returning from the rescue center with another pet.

The actor’s participation in the Eastwood Ranch Foundation event reinforces the family’s long-standing commitment to the animal cause. Both Matt and Luciana have already supported initiatives by the organization, which includes other Hollywood names such as Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron.

Why adopting stray animals matters

Cases like that of the Damon family highlight the practical impact of adoptions: they reduce the number of animals in overcrowded shelters and save the lives of pets with difficult histories. In the United States, thousands of dogs and cats are still euthanized annually in high-risk shelters. Actions like the one Matt participated in help raise public awareness and encourage responsible adoptions.

The actor, who balances his career in blockbusters with a discreet family life, shows that the commitment to rescues goes beyond celebrities: it is a choice that any family can make, regardless of the size of the house.
