Coach Marcelo Bielsa has already outlined Uruguay’s initial formation for their first match in the World Cup, facing challenges with important absences. Celeste will not be able to count on midfielder Arrascaeta, who was banned from the opening clash due to a calf injury. The Argentine coach worked on the composition of the team that will face Saudi Arabia next Monday, in Miami, in the United States, without the Flamengo player.
Information released by the newspaper El País indicates that the Uruguayan team, polished by Bielsa in training in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, will be assembled with the following names:
- Rochet
- Varela, Ronald Araújo, Giménez and Mathías Olivera
- Ugarte and Valverde
- Pellistri, De la Cruz and Maximiliano Araújo
- Darwin Núñez
The drafted team offers the coach several tactical possibilities on the field, exploring formations that vary from the traditional 4-3-3, through a 4-4-2, to a 4-1-4-1, with Ugarte acting as a holding midfielder and Darwin Núñez leading the attack as a center forward. This tactical flexibility becomes even more crucial given the challenges posed by absences.
In addition to Arrascaeta, Uruguay will also not have defenders Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez available for their debut in the competition, both also sidelined due to injury problems. The absence of these strong athletes in defense and midfield demands a significant adaptation of Bielsa’s strategies, who needs to reorganize the team’s structure in vital sectors.
The Uruguayan team, under the command of Marcelo Bielsa, is included in Group H of the World Cup. In addition to the clash against Saudi Arabia, the bracket also includes the teams from Cape Verde and Spain, promising challenging clashes in the first phase of the tournament.
Following the group stage, Uruguay will face Cape Verde in the second round, again in Miami. The game is scheduled for 7pm (Brasília time) on June 21st. The final match of this initial stage will be against Spain, five days later, with the match scheduled for 9pm in Akron.
