Alpine succeeds in appeal and Gasly has podium at the Monaco Grand Prix reinstated
After detailed analysis, Pierre Gasly’s podium at the Monaco Grand Prix has been confirmed again. The decision came after the Alpine team was successful in its official request for review with the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
Gasly, who started the race in ninth place on the Principality grid the previous weekend, managed to advance to fourth place. That progress came during a race marked by two Safety Car interventions and a red flag interruption, and he even moved up an additional place when Mercedes driver George Russell received a drive-through penalty near the end.
However, the French driver faced two consecutive penalties for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane throughout the contest. With two five-second penalties added to his final time, he dropped to seventh place in the official standings, an outcome that left him visibly disappointed.
Shortly after the end of the race, the Alpine team formalized a request to review the determination that had deprived Gasly of his first podium of the season. The initial hearing on the case took place on Thursday, coinciding with the start of activities for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
The team, based in Enstone, was successful in the first stage of the hearing. The positive outcome was attributed to the successful presentation of evidence considered new, significant and highly relevant to the process.
A new session to review the penalty imposed on Gasly was subsequently held on Thursday. Subsequently, on Friday morning, the FIA officially confirmed that the sanctions imposed on the French driver had been annulled, thus restoring his place on the Monaco Grand Prix podium.
In the Barcelona paddock, Pierre Gasly expressed his reaction and relief at the news that his third place in Monaco had been officially reinstated.
Through an official statement, the Alpine team stated: “We received with great satisfaction the FIA’s decision to accept our Right of Review, following the release of the final classification of the Monaco Grand Prix, which took place last weekend.”
“As a result of this decision, the stewards chose to annul the two five-second sanctions that had been applied to car number 10,” the note added. “This act thus restores the third place achieved by our team.”
“We express our gratitude to the FIA and Formula One Management for the clarity and collaboration demonstrated throughout the Right to Review process and for reaching this important decision,” the statement concluded.
“Right now, the team’s full concentration is directed towards the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, scheduled for this weekend, with the aim of achieving the best possible performance with both of our vehicles.”
With this reversal, Red Bull competitor Isack Hadjar loses his position on the podium, being demoted to fourth place. In addition, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and the two Racing Bulls cars, driven by Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, also drop one place each in the final classification.
