During Summer Game Fest 2026, Capcom officially confirmed the development of Resident Evil Veronica. This remake is one of the most anticipated titles by fans, considered a crucial chapter with great narrative depth in the acclaimed survival horror saga.

After presenting a cinematic video that highlighted the game’s atmosphere, the Japanese company assured that the new version will move away from the fixed cameras, characteristics of the original edition released in the 2000s. The game will feature a completely third-person view, with the camera movement positioned above the character’s shoulders.

This public statement defines the mechanical orientation and structure that the Resident Evil Veronica project will have, being developed with the RE Engine. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi provided these details in a chat with Campaign Mode, explaining how the gameplay experience and climate will be revamped for current-gen hardware and personal computers.

Released in 2000 for the SEGA Dreamcast, the original game, “Resident Evil: Code Veronica”, represented the last major entry in the main series to employ fixed cameras and classic tank controls. By opting for a third-person perspective, the remake establishes a direct connection with the gameplay model established by “Resident Evil 2 Remake” and “Resident Evil 4 Remake”, offering a modern experience to players.

According to the development team, the decision to adopt this vision behind the protagonist was considered the best way to convey the psychological horror and the feeling of isolation on Rockfort Island, adapting them to contemporary technological resources. Capcom clarified that the adoption of first or third person is an analysis carried out individually for each title, based on the impact sought in the story.

Interestingly, the inclusion of a first-person perspective in the announcement video echoes a marketing tactic already employed in “Resident Evil 3 Remake.” On that occasion, early cutscenes simulated Jill Valentine’s point of view before the game effectively switched to the over-the-shoulder camera during gameplay.

The engineering work on “Resident Evil Veronica” will benefit from the expertise of Capcom’s experienced developers. The core team that led the remakes of “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil 4” was transferred to this new challenge, ensuring technical uniformity in improving confrontations, character movement and the reaction of enemies’ artificial intelligence.

A significant change in the editorial structure involves the game’s nomenclature itself. Capcom has decided to permanently remove the term “Code” from the official title. Yoshiaki Hirabayashi clarified that this measure aims to consolidate the brand’s identity, in line with the most recent releases in the series, which employ a main name or just numerals.

In terms of plot, the game narrates the odyssey of Claire Redfield, who sets out in search of her brother, Chris Redfield, whose whereabouts are unknown after the incidents in Raccoon City. The story takes place in a penitentiary dominated by biological threats and marks the resurgence of the iconic antagonist Albert Wesker, inaugurating conflicts that would define the course of the saga.

The production team is focused on adapting the original script for a more serious, dark and reality-based approach. Aspects of the classic story that had a more dramatic or exaggerated character, such as the fight sequences reminiscent of action films of the time and the interaction of the character Steve Burnside, will be subjected to the same tone adjustment seen in previous remakes developed with the RE Engine.

The central purpose is to intensify the atmosphere of biological horror and make the clashes against the mutant creatures on Rockfort Island even more terrifying, without the technical limitations that existed in the hardware of twenty years ago.

Resident Evil Veronica’s arrival on the market is scheduled for mid-2027. The game will have specific releases for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC platforms, with digital distribution guaranteed by Steam. However, Capcom has not yet released data on values, exclusive editions or the start of pre-sales.
