The opening stage of the opening clash in Group E of the 2026 World Cup ended without changes to the score in the city of Philadelphia. The clash between the teams of Côte d’Ivoire and Ecuador, held on the lawn of Lincoln Financial Field, went into half-time with a blank draw on the scoreboard.

The first forty-five minutes delivered a very similar spectacle for the fans present. While the South American team demonstrated greater aggression and offensive control at the beginning of the game, the African squad managed to balance their actions and take the lead in the moments before the partial whistle.

The Ecuadorian team dictated the pace right after the ball rolled. With just a minute of the ball in play, midfielder Moisés Caicedo tried to surprise with a long-range shot, which ended up going through the baseline. The South American pressure remained intense and resulted in a golden opportunity after ten minutes, when experienced striker Enner Valencia benefited from a mistake and slip by the African defense, but ended up finishing over the opponent’s goal from inside the penalty area.

The great chance to open the scoring in favor of the Andean team came at the twenty-three minute mark. Striker John Yeboah disarmed the opposing defense, cut to the central region and fired a firecracker that exploded violently against the crossbar. Following this offensive blitz, it was Alan Minda’s turn to test his luck with a shot from inside the box, which also stopped at the Ivorian post, frustrating the South American fans.

It took a while, but the African representation managed to organize its tactical scheme and began to threaten the opponent’s rearguard. One of the first scares occurred at sixteen minutes, through a dangerous cross hit made by Bazoumana Touré. Later, center forward Elye Wahi found space in the danger zone and fired at the goal, stopping after a helpful intervention by goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez, who prevented the opening of the score.

The nervousness of the debut was reflected in the discipline of the African team, which saw key players such as Franck Kessié and Seko Fofana receive yellow cards after committing serious infractions. This situation forced the team’s midfield sector to act with extreme caution to avoid an early expulsion that would jeopardize the tournament campaign. In addition to the duo, athlete Guéla Doué also entered the list of those punished by the match referee.

In the final moments before going to the changing rooms, the Ivorians intensified their presence on the attacking field. Names like Nicolas Pépé and Wilfried Singo created clear goal situations, forcing Ecuador’s defensive system to work twice as hard to ward off the danger. Despite the four minutes of extra time granted by the referee, neither net shook, maintaining absolute equality on the scoreboard.
