Swiss authorities investigate death of Brazilian in accident on Lake Geneva

The death of a 46-year-old Brazilian man is the subject of investigation by authorities in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. He drowned in Lake Geneva, near the Rolle region, last Saturday, the 18th.

Resident in France and on a leisure trip to Switzerland, the victim drowned during a swimming activity near Rolle beach, on the shores of Lake Geneva. According to a note issued by the Vaud Public Prosecutor’s Office, the police were alerted at around 1:45 pm (local time) by people who noticed someone in trouble in the water.

Upon arrival, officers located the man unconscious approximately ten feet from shore. Individuals present at the scene acted promptly, rescuing him and beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. However, despite the efforts of the emergency teams, who tried to revive him, his death was confirmed right there.

In response to what happened, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the opening of an investigation by a prosecutor to clarify the precise causes of death. Responsibility for the investigation has been delegated to the lake brigade of the Canton of Vaud Police, which will have the support of forensic experts.

The relief and investigation operation required the mobilization of several resources, including the gendarmerie, the lake brigade, the scientific police, local ambulances and other units specialized in emergencies.

In light of the incident, the police reinforced warnings to the population about the dangers of drowning, especially during the European summer, a period when incidents like this become more common. Authorities’ guidelines include entering the water gradually, avoiding bathing immediately after meals and ensuring continued supervision of children in appropriate swimming areas.

So far, no information has been released about possible contacts between Itamaraty and the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the case, with the investigation of the circumstances still ongoing.
