Globo commissioned the continuation of Avenida Brasil from author João Emanuel Carneiro, who accepted the project and began the initial sketches of the plot. The soap opera, originally shown in 2012, is expected to debut in prime time in mid-2027, after the airing of Quem Ama Cuida, by Walcyr Carrasco. Adriana Esteves and Murilo Benício have already confirmed their participation as Carminha and Tufão, central characters in the family and revenge story that marked Brazilian television drama.

The decision arises from the broadcaster’s strategy to prioritize sequences of consolidated hits, instead of remakes, driven by the performance of productions such as No Rancho Fundo, derived from Mar do Sertão in 2022, and Êta Mundo Melhor!, sequel to Êta Mundo Bom! 2016. These examples served as a reference to convince the author to resume the narrative.

The project aims to advance the events left open at the end of the original plot, keeping the focus on family tensions and everyday upheavals in Divino, a fictional neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

  • Main reasons for the sequence: good public response to recent derivatives; need to revamp primetime after mixed results on remakes.
  • Initial cast: Adriana Esteves (Carminha), Murilo Benício (Tufão); other names from the original, such as Débora Falabella (Nina), still under negotiation.
  • Direction: Ricardo Waddington rehired for the position, after a successful partnership with Carneiro in previous works.

Sequence strategy drives project

Globo adopts continuity approaches for impact soap operas, after the remake of Vale Tudo registered an average of 21 points in São Paulo, below initial expectations. This experience accelerated the approval of Avenida Brasil 2, expected to surpass the 38 points average of the original.

No Rancho Fundo, launched in 2024, maintained 25 weekly points, while Êta Mundo Melhor! reached 28 points in partial reruns. These numbers reinforced the commercial viability of the new phase.

Projac, the broadcaster’s production center, prioritizes accelerated development, with weekly meetings to align scripts and castings.

Return of Carminha and Tufão to the center of the plot

Adriana Esteves revives the villain Carminha, who manipulated events at Divino more than a decade ago, while Murilo Benício takes on the role of Tufão, the naïve former football player in his turbulent marriage. The actors accepted the invitations after initial discussions about scheduling.

The plot advances 13 years after the outcome of 2012, exploring the consequences of past actions in an updated context of family relationships. Carneiro plans 160 chapters, with recordings scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Elements such as the Divino dump and the nucleusand football return, adapted to new social dynamics. The production estimates a budget of R$20 million per month, similar to recent successes.

Original cast in focus for new phase

Débora Falabella, Nina’s interpreter, discusses the return to connect arcs of resolved revenge. Cauã Reymond, who played Jorginho, expresses interest in reprising the role in recent interviews.

Vera Holtz and Eliane Giardini, like Jandira and Genésia, are part of advanced negotiations. Marcos Caruso, known as Leleco, confirms availability for comic scenes.

Other names, such as Débora Bloch and Camila Morgado, may appear in special appearances. The lineup aims to balance veterans and young talent to freshen the narrative.

The casting process takes place in Rio de Janeiro, with tests for new characters peripheral to the main core.

Behind the scenes reveal priority at Projac

Ricardo Waddington’s rehiring occurs at Carneiro’s request, after two years away from directing soap operas. The director returns to lead the technical team, focused on real locations in Rio.

João Emanuel Carneiro, author of A Regra do Jogo and Amor Eterno Amor, balances the project with current commitments. He completes adjustments to Mania de Você, which records an average of 21.2 points.

The broadcaster allocates exclusive studios at Projac for pre-production, which began in November 2025. Costume and scenography teams review iconic elements, such as Tuf’s mansiono.

External recordings at Divino require municipal authorizations, scheduled to avoid overlaps with other productions.

Cultural impact of original soap opera persists

Avenida Brasil, shown from March to October 2012, reached peaks of 52 points on Ibope, with a rerun in 2020 recording an average of 25 points. The plot exported to 120 countries generated R$500 million in international rights.

Characters like Carminha influenced memes and everyday expressions, such as “hating doesn’t solve anything”. The soap opera addressed themes of social class and immigration, with scenes recorded in Argentina for Nina’s arc.

The ending, watched by 50 million Brazilians, left hooks for expansions, such as the fate of Lucinda and Roni. This basis supports the expectation for the sequel.

Reruns on pay channels keep the audience active, with weekly episodes attracting 1 million viewers.
