UCLA vs. Ohio State: Ohio State takes lead against UCLA without Iamaleava in the first half in Columbus

Ohio State

Ohio State - X

Ohio State leads UCLA 10-0 in the second quarter of the game played this Saturday (15) at Ohio Stadium, in Columbus. The home team scored a touchdown in the opening campaign and expanded with a field goal at the end of the first period. The Bruins, without starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, face offensive difficulties and are accumulating penalties.

The game began with UCLA receiving the ball after Ohio State won the toss and chose to postpone. The visitors’ attack failed to advance and quickly returned possession. The Buckeyes took advantage and covered the field in just a few plays to open the scoring.

Buckeyes’ dominant starting offense

Ohio State needed just six plays to score the first touchdown. Quarterback Will Howard connected on short passes and running back TreVeyon Henderson ran efficiently. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 7-0 with just over eight minutes played.

UCLA’s defense managed to force a three-and-out later. The punt gave the Bruins good field position, but they committed consecutive fouls and had to return the ball.

Penalties hamper UCLA campaigns

Two promising Bruins campaigns ended without points because ofof infractions. In the first, a holding canceled a long gain and forced a punt. In the second, another penalty put the offense on long third down, resulting in a turnover again.

With the backup quarterback, UCLA depends more on the ground game. Running back Jalen Berger attempted some runs, but the offense was unable to sustain long drives in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Defense limits damage at the end of the first quarter

Ohio State went ahead again at the end of the opening period. UCLA’s defensive unit managed to stop the offense inside the red zone and force a 38-yard field goal. The score went to 10-0 with just four seconds left on the clock.

The Buckeyes have over 150 total yards so far. The Bruins’ defense recorded two tackles for loss and pressured Howard on a few plays.

Iamaleava’s absence weighs on the attack

Nico Iamaleava was out of the game due to concussion symptoms suffered the previous week against Nebraska. The starting quarterback had been a central part of the Bruins’ attack in recent rounds. Without him, offensive coordinator Tim Skipper has to adjust the game plan on the fly.

Interim Skipper leads UCLA for the fourth week in a row. The team is looking for its first victory against a No. 1 ranked opponent since 1967.

Second quarter in progress

With 11 minutes remaining in the second period, UCLA tries to reduce the deficit. The attack starts on the 25 lineyards after touchback. The defense needs to contain Ohio State’s strong ground game, which has already accumulated more than 80 yards on the ground.

The Bruins continue to fight for one of the biggest upsets of the season. The match is broadcast on NBC and attracts national attention due to the difference in ranking between the teams.
