Valve definitively changed its strategy for the portable console market by confirming the end of production of the Steam Deck with an LCD screen. The decision positions models with OLED technology as the only option for new buyers, consolidating a new phase for the popular device. The change was made official on the product page at store Steam, where the 256 GB LCD version is already out of stock and is not expected to be restocked.

Originally launched in 2022, the Steam Deck LCD was responsible for popularizing the concept of portable gaming PC, offering access to the Steam’s vast library in a practical format and at a competitive price. With the transition, the company signals a commitment to offering a higher quality visual and technical experience, even if this represents an increase in the cost of entry to the ecosystem.

For current owners of the LCD screen version, Valve has guaranteed full continuity of support. Isso means that devices will continue to receive all updates to the SteamOS operating system, as well as security fixes and compatibility improvements, ensuring the longevity and full functioning of hardware already in circulation.

Valve’s new strategy for the portable console

The decision to focus exclusively on OLED models simplifies Valve’s production line and logistics. By reducing the variety of components and configurations, the company is able to optimize its manufacturing and distribution processes, focusing resources on improving the platform that it now considers its quality standard.

With the end of the 256 GB LCD model, which sold for US$399, the product line was reconfigured. Agora, consumers have two options available, both equipped with the superior screen: a version with 512 GB of storage and another with 1 TB, which also includes an anti-reflective treatment on the screen glass.

This restructuring raises the device’s entry level. The Valve bets that the benefits of OLED technology are enough to justify the new starting price, targeting an audience that prioritizes image quality and a more refined user experience, aligning the Steam Deck with other premium devices on the market.

The company has not provided a detailed timeline for the global discontinuation of all LCD variants, but the lack of stock of the 256GB model indicates that the transition is already at an advanced stage. Unidades remainders of other capacities, such as 64 GB and 512 GB LCD, must be sold until existing stocks at partner retailers are completely exhausted.

What changes for consumers and the entry price

The main consequence for new buyers is the increase in investment required to acquire an Steam Deck. The most affordable model is the 512 GB OLED, with an official price of US$549, a considerable jump compared to the previous price. Essa change could alienate potential consumers who were looking for a more economical option to enter the world of portable PC gaming, making the barrier to entry higher.

In markets where Steam Deck is not officially sold, such as Brasil, the impact is even more significant. Consumers depend on importers and the so-called “gray market”, where prices are influenced by the dollar exchange rate, import taxes and sellers’ profit margins. With a higher base price, the final value of the device for the Brazilian consumer tends to increase proportionally, further distancing it from competitors with local distribution.

Technical superiority of the OLED screen

The transition to OLED technology is not just a change of panel, but represents a significant advance in the user experience. The new model’s 7.4-inch OLED screen, slightly larger than the 7-inch LCD, supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), providing a much higher level of contrast, with truly deep blacks and more vibrant and accurate colors. Essa feature transforms the way games are viewed, especially in dark scenes or with highly variable lighting. Além of visual quality, the refresh rate has been increased from 60 Hz to 90 Hz, resulting in more fluid and responsive gameplay in supported titles. Internamente, the device also received important improvements: the APU is now manufactured using a 6 nanometer process, more efficient than the 7nm process of the original model, contributing to lower energy consumption and heating. The battery was increased from 40 Wh to 50 Outras improvements include an Wi-Fi 6E module for faster, more stable wireless connections, an improved cooling system, and more refined haptic feedback.

Continued support for existing LCD models

Valve made a point of reassuring its user base. The company reinforced that the end of production of the LCD model does not mean the end of support. Todos owners of any version of Steam Deck will continue to benefit from the platform’s software ecosystem.

SteamOS updates, which frequently bring performance optimizations, new features, and increased gaming compatibility, will be rolled out simultaneously to all devices, regardless of display technology. Isso ensures that the investment made by early buyers is protected and that the gaming experience continues to evolve.

Competitive scenario in the notebook market

With the new pricing configuration, the Steam Deck OLED positions itself more directly against competitors such as the ASUS ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go. Esses devices, which run Windows 11, offer greater flexibility to install games from other stores, such as Epic Games Store and PC Game Pass, in addition to, in general, having hardware with greater raw processing power.

However, the biggest differentiator of Steam Deck remains its operating system. SteamOS, based on Linux and featuring the Proton compatibility layer, is highly optimized for a simplified and straightforward gaming experience much like a traditional console. Seamless integration with the Steam store and community is a powerful attraction for the platform’s millions of users.

The Valve is betting that this cohesive, gaming-focused software experience is a valuable asset, capable of competing with the versatility of the Windows, which in a portable format can present usability and battery optimization challenges. The choice between systems, therefore, will depend on each user’s priority: integrated ecosystem or platform flexibility.

The Future of Valve Hardware

Despite the update to the OLED model, Valve has already indicated that a new generation of the device, a “Steam Deck 2” with a substantial leap in performance, is not expected to hit the market in the short term. The company’s current focus is refining the experience on existing hardware and expanding the capabilities of SteamOS.

The strategy appears to be to consolidate the current platform before introducing a successor. Isso allows developers to familiarize themselves with the hardware and optimize their games, creating a robust and stable ecosystem for players, while Valve researches and develops the technologies for its next big bet in the industry.

Device availability and procurement

The Steam Deck OLED models are available for direct purchase in the markets where Valve officially operates, with the 512 GB model costing US$549 and the 1 TB model, with anti-reflective screen, for US$649.
