Tribunal of Primeira Instância of Puebla of Sanabria decided to archive the criminal case opened after the accident that killed the former Liverpool Diogo Jota player and his brother, André Silva. The decision came out this Friday and confirms what had already been determined in November last year.
The accident occurred in the early hours of July 3, 2025 on the A52 motorway, near Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, northwest of Espanha. The Lamborghini in which the two were traveling left the track, hit the central divider and caught fire. Nenhum another vehicle was involved.
Perícia of Guardia Civil grounds filing
The reports prepared by Unidade of Trânsito of Guardia Civil were central to the decision. Experts analyzed traces at the scene, tire marks and the condition of the vehicle.
The conclusion was that there were not enough elements to indicate criminal liability of third parties. The court evaluated all available documentation before determining the closure of the criminal case.
- A tire burst while overtaking
- The car was traveling at a speed above the permitted speed on the road in that section.
- The impact against the central separator caused a fuel leak
- The explosion and fire immediately followed the shock
- Não there were signs of previous mechanical failure or external interference
Detalhes from Brothers Trip
Diogo Jota and André Silva were heading towards Santander. The plan was for the attacker to take a ferry to Reino Unido and present himself for the Liverpool pre-season. Ele had chosen not to fly following a recent operation related to a lung injury. André Silva accompanied his brother on the trip.
Diogo Jota was 28 years old and had recently gotten married. André Silva, 25 years old, worked for Penafiel, in Portugal. The bodies were removed from the charred vehicle by emergency teams. A truck driver passing by tried to help with a fire extinguisher, but was unable to control the flames.
Caminho for civil action remains open
The shelving of criminal proceedings does not prevent families from seeking redress in the civil sphere. The court expressly noted that the affected parties may bring actions to claim compensation that they deem appropriate.
The decision was communicated by Tribunal Superior of Justiça of Castilla and León. Fontes close to the case confirmed that the analysis was based exclusively on technical evidence collected by Guardia Civil.
Repercussão in Portuguese and English football
The death of the two brothers shook football in Portugal and Inglaterra. Diogo Jota had built a solid career at Wolverhampton and then at Liverpool, where he was respected for his speed and finishing. André Silva started to gain space in the Portuguese second division.
Clubes from both countries paid tribute shortly after the accident. Torcedores laid flowers and shirts at makeshift memorials in Anfield and in Gondomar, the family’s hometown. Federação Portuguesa of Futebol issued a note of condolence highlighting the talent and youth of the brothers.
The case now continues without criminal consequences. The technical investigation closed the possibility of criminal prosecution against anyone.
