Valve reassured fans of Steam Deck by confirming that the successor remains in active development. The company, however, signaled that the launch is not close. Segundo Pierre-Loup Griffais, developer of the company, the new laptop remains an important project, but gives way to other devices on the 2026 agenda.

In a recent interview, Griffais explained that work is progressing behind the scenes. The immediate focus is on bringing the Steam Machine and a new version of the Steam Controller to the market, scheduled to debut on May 4th.

Desenvolvimento continues, but without rushing

Steam Deck 2 has not been abandoned. Valve’s strategy is to work slowly, seeking to guarantee a significant leap in performance in the next generation of the notebook. Griffais reinforced that development continues consistently, and the company avoids rushing the project just to meet market expectations.

Essa approach reflects the corporate philosophy: each new hardware is built on the foundations of the previous one. Tecnologias and learnings from current projects, such as the upcoming Steam Frame and Steam Machine, are expected to directly influence the design and capabilities of the new handheld.

Integrated Ecossistema evolving

Valve sees its devices not as isolated products, but as part of a constantly evolving ecosystem. From the initial experiments with the first Steam Machine and Steam Controller to the smash success of the original Steam Deck, each generation incorporates lessons learned.

The new version of Steam Controller, for example, will bring improvements that could also benefit the future Steam Deck 2. Essa synergy between projects is central to the company’s strategy:

  • Steam Machine: current priority for release
  • Steam Controller: new version on May 4th
  • Steam Deck 2: active development in the background
  • Steam Frame: device under development
  • Filosofia: hardware as an integrated ecosystem

What to expect

Para Current Steam Deck owners, the message is clear: the original handheld will continue to be supported. Valve has not ruled out the Steam Deck 2, but has signaled that the next generation will arrive when the company feels confident about the performance offered.

Esse strategic schedule allows Valve to consolidate its position in the handheld gaming market while working on new fronts. The Steam Machine represents an attempt to expand beyond handhelds, while the new Steam Controller will offer more options for users.

Development of Steam Deck 2 continues. Quando arrives, should bring substantial improvements justified by the wait.
