Apple has activated a third type of subscription contract on App Store that allows users to pay an annual fee in 12 monthly installments. The system was made available to developers on April 27 and will enter general use from the release of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5 and visionOS 26.5, with the exception of the Estados Unidos and Singapura markets. Dispositivos with earlier versions (iOS 26.4 and above) will fully support the functionality.

Esse launch represents a strategic move by the company to increase revenue from its services. With iPhone sales stagnant, the challenge for Apple is to expand gains on platforms like App Store and Apple Music. The diversification of payment models seeks to attract users who are hesitant due to the high initial cost of traditional annual subscriptions.

Três options now compete in the application market

Monthly plans allow cancellation at any time, which makes them affordable for those who want to test an app before making a larger commitment. Entretanto, the final price is significantly higher. Já the annual model offers the cheapest rate, but requires full payment upfront in a single installment, creating a barrier for users on a limited budget.

The new 12-month contract with monthly payments occupies the middle ground. Ele combines flexibility and savings by allowing the user to spread an annual fee into 12 monthly installments, avoiding a large single payment.

  • Plano monthly: easy to cancel, but high price per period
  • Annual Plano: Lower total cost but high one-time payment
  • Plano 12 months with installments: reduced annual price, paid in installments in months

Real Simulação shows savings of up to US$40 annually

Considerando the Pro plan of Claude, an artificial intelligence service that has gained recent traction, the difference is clear. A monthly subscription costs $20 per month ($240 annually). The annual plan costs US$200 upfront, saving US$40. The new 12-month model with monthly payments is US$17 per month (US$204 annually), allowing savings without compromising cash flow.

Para productivity and creative applications, the advantage is even greater. In the case of Illustrator from Adobe, the monthly plan costs 4,980 yen. The annual costs 34,680 yen upfront. Porém, the annual plan with monthly payments via App Store would cost 39,360 yen, making it about 4,680 yen more expensive than the one-time payment. Nem all developers will adopt the same pricing strategy, but this fluctuation in value is common in the enterprise software market.

Para users who intend to use a service long-term but consider the initial outlay of an annual fee to be a significant obstacle, this new model is particularly attractive. The aggregate savings, even if modest in absolute numbers, can motivate experimentation with complementary services.

Cláusulas contractual demands consumer attention

The new subscription model brings obligations that deserve scrutiny. Diferente of the monthly plan, where the user can cancel without notice, any cancellation of a 12-month contract requires payment of the remaining installments. If someone signs up and cancels after three months of use, they will be charged for the remaining nine months in the form of automatic monthly installments.

Renewals occur automatically at the end of the 12-month period. A new contract starts immediately, maintaining recurring debt. Para increases transparency, Apple sends push notifications as the renewal date approaches, but it is up to the consumer to cancel proactively to avoid bill surprises.

If the intention is to use an app for only three months, the traditional monthly plan remains the most appropriate choice. Já for those who already know that they will use the service throughout the year, this model offers a clear cost advantage and disbursement predictability.

Estratégia Apple faces competition from Adobe and others

Apple does not act alone in this transformation of the digital signatures market. Adobe already offered annual plans paid monthly before this initiative. The difference is in scale: App Store impacts hundreds of thousands of applications, while Adobe controls its own products and Creative Cloud as a closed ecosystem.

Cupertino’s company reinforced this movement with the launch of Creator Studio, a subscription package that bundles creative applications such as Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. Esse set represents direct response to Creative Cloud from Adobe, intensifying competition in the professional segment.

Tanto Apple and Adobe recognize that expanding access through diversification of payment methods expands market potential. The new 12-month model with monthly installments is, therefore, part of a larger reconfiguration in the software-as-a-service sector.
