Fórmula 1 will change the engine regulations from the 2027 season onwards. The FIA confirmed the change after an online meeting with teams, power unit manufacturers and Formula 1 Management. The main adjustment increases the contribution of the internal combustion engine and reduces that of the electrical system.
The decision seeks to resolve complaints about the behavior of current cars. Pilotos reported difficulties using all available power in qualifying laps because of the phenomenon known as clipping.
Mudança returns greater weight to the combustion engine
The new package increases the nominal power of the ICE by around 50 kW. At the same time, the ERS deployment power drops by 50 kW. With the increase in fuel flow, the balance should approach 60% for the thermal engine and 40% for the electric engine.
Essa configuration differs from the close 50-50 split adopted for 2026. The change still maintains greater emphasis on battery than in pre-2026 regulations. Fabricantes and teams now discuss technical details before the final vote on World Motor Sport Council.
- ~50 kW Aumento at ICE power
- ~50 kW Redução at ERS deployment power
- Elevação in the fuel stream to support thermal gain
- Ajustes in component hardware for increased robustness
- Discussões techniques in groups with teams and manufacturers
Reunião evaluated adjustments already made in Miami
Participantes from the meeting reviewed the measures implemented in Miami’s GP. Essas changes were intended to improve security and reduce excessive energy harvesting. Segundo the FIA, the package delivered more balanced competition with no safety issues detected to date.
Avaliações continue for possible refinements in wet starts and track conditions. Teams will receive updates as soon as they are defined.
Objetivo is to make driving more intuitive
The FIA highlighted that the changes aim to make driving more intuitive and fair. The clipping setback should allow drivers to accelerate more consistently at the end of the straights. The adjustment also requires adaptations to the chassis, such as larger fuel tanks.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, has indicated in recent months a willingness for deeper developments. Ele publicly mentioned the possibility of bringing forward the next major engine change to 2030, including the return of V8s.
Detalhes finals still depend on consensus
Power unit manufacturers and teams will deepen technical discussions in the coming weeks. The objective is to finalize the package before electronic voting. The FIA reinforced that the proposals are the result of recent consultations with multiple stakeholders, including drivers.
The change comes at a time when the category is adapting to the 2026 regulations. Equipes and manufacturers are already investing resources to meet tight deadlines.
Impacto expected in 2027 cars
With larger tanks and greater emphasis on ICE, cars must have a different speed profile. The extra thermal power tends to soften the behavior in high curves and sections of full acceleration. Fabricantes as well as Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull Powertrains, Renault and Honda already participate in the working groups.
The Formula 1 maintains the focus on sustainability, but adjusts the path to balance performance and spectacle.
