WhatsApp announced the end of support for devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1 from September 8, 2026. The decision marks another step by Meta Platforms in the modernization of its messaging platform, affecting users with smartphones launched between 2010 and 2014. The measure was officially communicated in the application’s Central and Ajuda, offering a few months for users to prepare for the transition.

Razões techniques behind discontinuation

Meta justifies the restriction based on security concerns and the need to implement features that depend exclusively on newer versions of Android. Android 6.0, known as Marshmallow and released in 2015, introduced significant improvements in security, permissions control and battery management. Previous Versões have vulnerabilities that cannot be patched retroactively, making it impossible to maintain the standard of protection required by the company.

Recursos WhatsApp’s advanced features, such as enhanced encryption, high-quality video calls, and sophisticated filters, rely on APIs only available in Android 6.0 or higher. Manter backwards compatibility would make development slower and more complex, impeding continued innovation. Essa strategy follows the trend adopted by other major platforms: Instagram, Facebook and Messenger have already discontinued support for Android 5.0 in the last two years.

Quais cell phone models will be affected

WhatsApp does not release an official list of all impacted devices, only communicating the minimum operating system requirements. Porém, several models released between 2010 and 2014 work with Android 5.0 or earlier versions and will automatically lose access after the deadline. Seis major manufacturers have devices that will be affected by the change:

  • Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S4 Mini, S5, Note 2, Core, Trend and J2
  • LG Optimus L3, L5, L7, F5, L3 II Dual and L5 II
  • Motorola Moto G and Moto E (first generation)
  • Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3
  • Huawei Ascend Mate, Ascend G740 and Ascend D2
  • HTC models released before Android 6

The impact is especially relevant in developing countries, where older cell phones are still actively circulating. Lower-income Usuários who rely on second-hand devices will face greater difficulties adapting to the change. The discontinuation occurs progressively, with WhatsApp typically blocking access before the official announced date.

Diferenças between Android and iPhone

Usuários of iPhone will not face restrictions in this update. WhatsApp will continue to function normally on devices running iOS 15.1 or higher, reflecting Apple’s policy of providing security updates for longer periods of time. An iPhone 6s or newer can install iOS 15.1 and therefore maintains full compatibility with the app.

Apple’s strategy of controlling both hardware and software allows older devices to receive critical security updates consistently. Essa approach contrasts with the fragmented Android ecosystem, where different manufacturers offer varying periods of support. Usuários iPhone owners have fewer concerns about this change compared to Android smartphone owners.

Como check compatibility and prepare

Usuários who suspect they have an affected device should check the system version in their smartphone’s settings. No Android, the information is in “About Phone” or “Device Information”, displaying the version number as “Android Version” followed by a number. If the device shows Android 5.0 or 5.1, WhatsApp will stop working after September 8th.

Duas major options are available to affected users. The first is to update the cell phone software to a newer version of Android, if the device is compatible. Muitos older smartphones may be upgraded beyond their original version depending on the manufacturer and specific model. The second option is to migrate to a new device that runs at least Android 6.0.

Preparação for transition

Meta offers users a few months to adapt to the change before September. Quem has an affected device and can backup conversations, transfer contacts, and prepare for migration to a new device. WhatsApp offers native cloud backup options, allowing message history to be preserved during the transition without losing important data.

Após September 8, Any attempt to open WhatsApp on an Android 5.0 will result in a compatibility error. The application may not open or may display a message that the version of Android is incompatible. Essa is the third or fourth time in a decade that WhatsApp has stopped support for older versions of Android, reflecting the technological reality where maintaining backwards compatibility becomes unsustainable for the continued development of new features.
