Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter behind 2015’s failed Quarteto Fantástico, has opened up about his disappointment with the radical changes made to his original script. The writer had so much confidence in the project that he even compared the reboot’s potential to Christopher Nolan’s Cavaleiro trilogy. Essa’s hope only lasted until the moment Slater found himself in the audience watching the finished film.

Slater, who also worked on the recently released Mortal Kombat II (2026), discovered the substantial changes in his work only when he saw it finished. Desconectado of the problems that occurred during production on set, the screenwriter only realized the magnitude of the changes when he experienced the final product as an ordinary viewer.

Esperança transformed into shock during projection

Slater remained confident about the project throughout two years of development. Durante this period, he circulated among industry professionals enthusiastically recommending the film. In interviews and informal conversations, the screenwriter promised a cinematic success comparable to the best superhero releases of the time.

“Guys, get ready for this film. Seremos the next Christopher Nolan. Temos the next trilogy of Trevas’s Cavaleiro in your hands”, declared Slater confidently during the production phase. Sua certainly reflected the quality he hoped to see on screen when the final work reached theaters.

The reality, however, was completely different. Quando sat in the audience to watch the debut, Slater faced a moment of absolute shock. What Nada saw on screen was similar to the creative decisions he had made in the original script. Mudanças depths had transformed his vision into something unrecognizable.

Desconexão between creation and execution

The screenwriter reflects with frustration on the divorce between his creative intention and the final result. Segundo Slater, when a writer works on someone else’s property, they cede a significant amount of creative control. Essa dynamics leave the screenwriter vulnerable to the decisions of directors, producers and other professionals involved in production.

“There was nothing there that even remotely resembled what I had decided to do,” Slater told The Hollywood Reporter. Ele explains that working as a screenwriter on projects within corporate universes amplifies this disconnect. The writer provides the foundation but can do little to influence how directors and filmmakers interpret or modify his work.

Slater ends his reflection with a lesson about the film industry:

  • Projetos often doesn’t turn out the way the original creators dreamed
  • Escritores have limited impact on final product quality when working on third-party properties
  • The hope rests on collaborators sharing the same vision as the creator
  • Lack of creative alignment results in films that betray the original intent of the script

Fracasso commercial and critical

2015’s Quarteto Fantástico faced catastrophic performance on multiple fronts. Orçado at 120 million dollars, the film only grossed 167.9 million worldwide. Apesar having marginally surpassed its initial investment, the margin was insufficient to cover marketing, distribution and other operating expenses, resulting in a significant loss for Fox.

The critical reception was even more devastating. The film received an approval rating of just 9% on review aggregators, one of the worst percentages ever recorded for a superhero blockbuster produced by a major studio. Essa’s combination of commercial failure and critical disapproval sealed the project’s fate.

Plans to expand the story into a trilogy were canceled immediately. Fox acknowledged that restarting the franchise was impossible at that time. The decision left Slater and the rest of the creative team watching their work disappear from the industry’s plans.

Elenco and film structure

The film brought together rising actors at the time. Miles Teller played Senhor Fantástico, Michael B. Jordan took on the role of Tocha Humana, Kate Mara acted as Mulher-Invisible and Jamie Bell embodied Coisa. Apesar of the quality of the selected cast, the chemistry between the actors and the general direction of the film were unable to save the project.

Reinício ten years later

Marvel Studios, recognizing the property’s potential and learning from its previous failure, planned a complete reboot. Dez years after the 2015 disaster, the studio released Quarteto Fantástico: Primeiros Passos in 2025, seeking to reposition Marvel’s first family of heroes.

Essa new version represented an attempt to erase the memory of the previous reboot and offer viewers a fresh interpretation of the characters’ origins. The break allowed the industry to absorb the lessons of the failure and reimagine how to approach this prized property in a different cinematic context.
