Chad Feehan will not continue as showrunner for “Dutton Ranch” in a possible second season of the series. The creator and executive producer of the first season leaves the project weeks before the premiere, scheduled for May 15th on Paramount+ and Paramount Network. The series is a spin-off of “Yellowstone” centered on the characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.

Saída confirmed by specialized vehicles

Variety and Deadline reported the change in production. Fontes close to the project indicate dissatisfaction with the conduct of the series after filming of the first season ended. Feehan receives credit as creator, based on characters developed by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. The decision on who will take creative charge for future seasons has not yet been announced, although indications point to the promotion of one of the current writers to the role of showrunner.

The plot follows the main couple fighting for survival on a seven-thousand-acre ranch in the south of Texas. Beth and Rip seek to build a life together, far from the traumatic events of “Yellowstone,” while facing intense competition from a rival ranch and preparing young Carter for the future. The tone maintains the franchise’s signature style, with an emphasis on family loyalty and power conflicts in a rural environment.

Contexto in the Taylor Sheridan franchise

“Dutton Ranch” is part of the expanded universe created by Taylor Sheridan. The original series “Yellowstone” ended its main trajectory with high ratings, paving the way for multiple spin-offs in the same narrative ecosystem. Sheridan and John Linson serve as executive producers, along with David Glasser, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, Keith Cox, and Christina Alexandra Voros.

Feehan had already worked on another of the house’s projects, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”, supervising the first full season. The direction of “Dutton Ranch” involved professionals such as Christina Alexandra Voros, who signed the premiere and final episode, as well as Greg Yaitanes, Jessica Lowrey and Phil Abraham. The photography and direction sought to maintain the franchise’s characteristic visual identity, with broad landscapes and an intensely dramatic narrative.

Próximos steps and perspectives

Production on the first season has now concluded, allowing Paramount+ to proceed with the launch campaign as scheduled. Attention now turns to defining creative command if the series is renewed for a second season. Feehan’s departure comes at a sensitive time, close to the release of the first promotional materials and teasers that show the main couple in the Texan environment.

The “Yellowstone” franchise continues to expand its reach with multiple side projects in development. “Dutton Ranch” represents direct continuity of the original show’s most popular characters, while maintaining a connection with longtime fans who will recognize familiar elements in the new setting and narrative.
