The NBA warned Victor Wembanyama for violating media access rules after he refused to speak to reporters following San Antonio Spurs’s loss in Jogo 5 of the Conferência Oeste Finals. The league confirmed the measure when announcing the action this Wednesday. Spurs lost 127-114 to Oklahoma City Thunder, leaving San Antonio down 3-2 in the series.

A spokesperson for Spurs reported that Wembanyama would not be available for interviews approximately one hour after the match ended. Spurs’s coach, Mitch Johnson, had already held a press conference about the result when the announcement was made.

Underwhelming Desempenho triggers NBA backlash

On Tuesday, Wembanyama scored 20 points on just 4-of-15 shooting. Ele captured just 1 rebound in the first half, matching his worst mark for a period during the playoffs. Esse number matches the second half of Spurs’s defeat in Jogo 3.

Oklahoma City took advantage of the poor performance of Spurs’s pivot, shooting 49% while Wembanyama was on the court. Foi highest shooting percentage against him in the entire postseason. Johnson stated that Spurs will “need” its central star to regain performance to avoid elimination in Thursday’s Jogo 6.

Histórico of fines for lack of press availability

The NBA has already punished other players for not attending press conferences after playoff games:

  • Jimmy Butler fined $25,000 in 2023 for refusing to talk to reporters
  • Dillon Brooks was also fined US$25,000 for the same infraction in the same year
  • Ambos cases occurred during the postseason

The fine imposed on Wembanyama has not yet been disclosed. The league maintains these requirements as a way to ensure regular media access to players after official matches.

Contraste with previous recognition

The current scenario contrasts with Wembanyama’s previous trajectory in the season. In April, he won the 2025-26 Prêmio Magic Johnson, awarded by Associação of Escritores of Basquete Profissional. The honor goes to the NBA player who “best combines excellence on the court with cooperation and elegance when dealing with the media and fans.”

The award indicates his record of willingness to speak to journalists throughout most of the regular season. The current incident marks a significant break with this pattern of behavior.
