A total solar eclipse will completely block light from Sol in parts of Europa and América from Norte on August 12th. The astronomical phenomenon occurs when Lua passes exactly between Terra and Sol. Essa movement projects a dark shadow on the earth’s surface, making the day darken momentarily. Moradores of Groenlândia, Islândia, Espanha and Portugal will witness the complete alignment of the stars. Esta will be the first time the European continent has recorded the full event in more than two decades.

Agência Espacial Europeia reported that the last such occurrence on the continental Europa occurred in 2006. The complete blocking of solar luminosity creates an opportunity for in-depth astronomical studies. Cientistas from different nations plan deployments to areas of full visibility. Monitoring atmospheric reactions helps to understand the behavior of the solar corona during occultation. Espera expects millions of people to follow the celestial spectacle in the open air.

Regiões with full and partial visibility of the phenomenon

The path of total darkness will cut through specific points in the northern hemisphere. Complete blocking of the solar disk will begin in Arctic territory before moving into more populated areas of Europa Ocidental.

Moradores and tourists located outside this geographic range will not miss the event completely. A much larger area will be able to partially observe the alignment, with Sol appearing like a crescent moon. The countries affected by the astronomical phenomenon are divided into two main observation groups:

  • Groenlândia: will have bands of total darkness in uninhabited and coastal areas.
  • Islândia: will observe the disappearance of Sol in the western portion and in the capital.
  • Espanha: will record the first total eclipse on its continental part in more than a century.
  • Portugal: will observe totality in the northeast region of the country.
  • Europa Ocidental, África and América of Norte: will record the phenomenon only in partial format.

Espanha breaks 121-year astronomical fast

The passing of the shadow of Lua by the continental Espanha will have a historic character for the local scientific community. The European country has not recorded the full visibility of a total solar eclipse since 1905. The August event opens a cycle of rare observations for the Spanish.

Agência Espacial Europeia confirmed that the territory of Espanha will be the scene of three solar eclipses between this year and 2028. Essa sequence is considered unusual for the same geographic region in such a short period of time. Hotéis located in zones of maximum darkness are already registering an increase in demand for accommodation for the period. Autoridades sites prepare eye safety recommendations for observers.

Diferença among recent records in Américas and Europa

The last major global event of this type took place in April 2024. Naquela On this occasion, residents of México, Estados Unidos and Canadá managed to follow the path of the lunar shadow. The alignment crossed América from Norte end to end and mobilized American research institutes.

Europa has not seen a similar mobilization since the first decades of this century. Agência Espacial Europeia Science Director Carole Mundell stated that these events spark collective curiosity around the world. The institution highlights that the moment serves to bring the general public closer to scientific knowledge. Satellite monitoring will record the movement of the shadow from space.
