Users of several platforms reported this Friday (12) a widespread problem that displays the error message 404 – Page Not Found when accessing Downdetector to check the status of services.
The falls monitoring website, which aggregates user reports in real time, failed at the same time that several social networks and internet providers registered spikes in complaints. Among the most cited are Instagram, Facebook, Discord, Roblox, Reddit, YouTube and telecommunications services such as Frontier, Spectrum, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Xfinity by Comcast, Cox and Mediacom.
Reports indicate that the 404 error appeared when trying to view the status of these platforms on Downdetector, which suggests an overload or instability on the monitoring site itself during the peak of problems.
Impacted social networks and messengers
Instagram and Facebook, both from Meta, concentrated most of the complaints. Users reported difficulties loading feeds, logging in or accessing the mobile and web versions. Other services such as Threads and Messenger also had specific reports.
In addition to social networks, games and entertainment platforms such as Roblox, Steam and Destiny have seen an increase in crash notifications. Internet and fiber optic providers, including Live Oak Fiber, Frontier and Spectrum, also appeared on the list of services with reported problems.
What does the 404 error indicate in context
The 404 code typically means that the requested page was not found on the server. In the case of Downdetector, the simultaneous error in multiple searches points to a possible scale problem: the high volume of access to the monitoring site may have overloaded its servers, creating a cascade effect that prevents users themselves from checking the status of the platforms.
This is not uncommon in large-scale incidents, when thousands of people are simultaneously trying to confirm whether the problem is general or isolated.
Impact on users’ routine
For those who depend on social networks for work, communication or entertainment, instability interrupts the normal flow. Companies that use these tools for customer service or marketing also feel the immediate impact. In Brazil and other countries, peak time coincided with the early afternoon, a time of high online activity.
To date, there is no official confirmation from Meta or other companies about the root cause. Many users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to share screenshots and reports, as Downdetector was unstable.
