An unprecedented tool was launched worldwide by Instagram, “Your Algorithm”, which gives users greater autonomy over the content suggested in their feeds on the platform. Although the functionality was revealed in December of the previous year, its operation was limited to North American territory until now, with the global release taking place this Wednesday (10).
Initially, the functionality was concentrated on Reels, allowing you to view and adjust the themes that guided video suggestions for the profile. Currently, the feature has also been extended to the Explore section. This evolution reflects a personalization strategy already seen in competitors, such as TikTok in 2024, which with its “For You” feed demonstrated the power of aligning the content displayed with individual preferences, significantly increasing user engagement.
Figuring out how to adjust content suggestions
To configure recommendations, users will notice a new icon in the top right corner of the screen while browsing Reels or the Explore section. This symbol, represented by two lines accompanied by hearts, will trigger the “Your algorithm” tool when tapped, displaying the topics that the platform considers most relevant to the profile based on recent interactions.
- After reviewing the general overview of this information, the user can select which topics are of real interest to them and which should be eliminated from the suggestions;
- If the tool does not present a desired subject to view more content, there is the option to enter it manually;
- In this process, simply type in the relevant topic and add it to the list, with the changes being applied immediately.
Additionally, the feature allows users to share their interest preferences directly in Stories with their follower base.
“We’re expanding ‘Your Algorithm’ to the main feed, allowing users to view and modify topics of interest across all crucial sections of Instagram,” stated the platform’s director, Adam Mosseri, on his official account.
In the same publication, he provided additional information about the tool’s operability. The personalization of content suggestions, as announced by Meta in the initial launch, will be implemented in other areas of the application in future stages.
The implementation of “Your Algorithm” on Instagram occurs progressively, as communicated by the technology giant. Consequently, the function may not be instantly accessible to all users.
