A 15-year-old student was hit in the head with a knife, inside a classroom at the Professor Antônio de Barros Serra State School, in São José do Rio Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, on August 10, 2026. The attacker is a 17-year-old girl who is also a student at the institution.
The Military Police reported that the student responsible for the attack was in a state of psychotic episode at the time of the incident. During her testimony, the teenager confessed to having carried out the attack motivated by “voices” she heard. The attacker’s mother also revealed to authorities that her daughter has a history of psychiatric treatment, adding a crucial element to the understanding of the episode.

The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) helped the victim, who was taken to the Base Hospital (HB) and remains hospitalized. So far, no information has been released about his health status. The student who carried out the attack was arrested and taken to Fundação Casa.
Through an official note, the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat announced that the episode is being classified as an infraction similar to the crime of attempted homicide. The department also announced the seizure of a cell phone and a package containing a substance suspected of being narcotic, both sent for expert analysis. The case is being registered at the 2nd Police District of São José do Rio Preto.
The São Paulo State Department of Education, also in an official statement, regretted what happened, stating that it was “vehemently against any type of violence, inside or outside schools”. The full note detailed the actions: “The school management immediately activated the Mobile Emergency Assistance Service (SAMU) and the Military Police. The injured student was sent for medical care, accompanied by her guardians. The student involved in the aggression, accompanied by her guardian, was taken to the police station. This morning, a Conviva team, made up of psychologists, is at the school unit to provide care and reception to the other students. The São José do Rio Preto Regional Education Unit and the school unit remain at the disposal of public security authorities for any clarifications”.
