Rumors and leaks indicate that Xbox is developing an innovative program that will allow physical games to be converted into digital licenses. Expectations are high, although official details have not yet been released about this functionality.

The potential functionality gains relevance when considering the future of games removed from the Xbox digital store, especially before the launch of “Project Helix”. If the company’s next console does not support discs, deleting a title from the Xbox Store would mean it would be immediately impossible to purchase it again.

Currently, on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, this situation is different. Games like Forza Horizon 3, which were removed from digital format years ago, can still be purchased on physical media and work normally on devices. For example, in the UK you can find it for around £10 in stores like CEX.

A crucial question lies in the inclusion of already discontinued games in the disc-to-digital program. These titles are likely to be covered, as existing owners of games removed from the Xbox Store (except those “permanently” delisted) are still able to download them. The logic would be similar: insert the disc and have access to the digital version.

With its launch scheduled for 2026, the disc-to-digital program could enable players, within a decade, to continue accessing old titles unavailable on current Xbox consoles. While maintaining disk drives in future devices is the ideal scenario, the trend indicates otherwise.

Despite the digital initiative, maintaining disk support in Project Helix would be an important addition. One of the reasons is PlayStation’s decision to end physical editions by 2028, which gives Xbox the opportunity to attract physical media enthusiasts. Furthermore, concerns about preserving games, which are frequently removed from digital stores, are constant. Many great Xbox titles that didn’t see a physical release end up lost, but the disc versions remain accessible.

Expectations now turn to the coming weeks, awaiting the full reveal of Xbox’s disc-to-digital program. There is also hope that some form of disk support will be integrated into Project Helix.

All additional details should be released soon.
