After seeing European customer orders exceed 100,000 units much faster than initially projected, the Bavarian carmaker introduced a third and final shift at the newly built Debrecen assembly plant in Hungary to maintain continuous twenty-four-hour production of the battery-electric crossover.
The facility runs full-time to handle the volume secured across European dealerships since the launch of the vehicle. BMW confirmed that 50,000 units of the iX3 have departed the line at the 2.3 billion dollar complex. The site must assemble the remaining 50,000 vehicles under current customer agreements.
Accelerated manufacturing milestones at the Hungarian facility
Debrecen recorded the fastest production increase across the entire history of BMW Group industrial sites. The factory shifted from a single daily shift to round-the-clock assembly in eight months.
More than 5,000 employees coordinate work across the active assembly lines. Industrial planning calls for the addition of a second electric vehicle at the Hungarian location before the end of the year. The upcoming model under preparation is the iX4 variant.
Assembly of the Neue Klasse electric crossover remains exclusive to Debrecen before the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico starts building models intended for the United States.
The architecture features dedicated battery cells, updated structural packaging and distinct assembly systems developed specifically for this electric program. BMW plans to expand this structural approach across upcoming vehicle introductions, including the iX4 and the i3 sedan.
The mid-size crossover provides an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 434 miles, recharges from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes, and competes against the Volvo EX60 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric.
