Rare case in France: Farmer celebrates birth of triplet calves

In the small town of Merlia, near Orgelet, farmer Pierre Viennet was the protagonist of an extraordinary event on Saturday. One of his cows brought three calves into the world, two of which were identical twins, a remarkably unusual birth in livestock farming.

Birth of triplets surprises on Merlia’s farm

Since his childhood, Pierre Viennet had the desire to own his own rural property and herd. This desire came true six years ago, when he settled in the village of Merlia, near Orgelet, and founded Gaec de Merlia Viennet, an agricultural cooperative.

In the world of agriculture, the birth of triplet animals is considered a true milestone, and that is exactly what happened this Saturday morning at the cooperative: the birth of three calves, two of which are homozygous, which indicates that they are identical twins, an extremely rare phenomenon that occurs in around one in every 100,000 bovine pregnancies.

Pierre’s emotion was evident, reflecting the realization of a childhood dream. He expressed the rarity of the event, stating, “It doesn’t happen often in a lifetime and it happened to me!”. Happiness was celebrated alongside his wife, Elina, and his two children, Naéva and Manoé.

Challenge to choose names for new calves

With a grandmother named Olga and the triplets’ mother named Ulga, and considering that the current year for animal registration follows the letter “B”, the family is in full discussion to define the names of these three little wonders.

One of the options that emerges behind the scenes is inspiration from the famous cartoon “Super Nanas”, with suggestions such as Bulle, Belle and Rebelle for the French version, or Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup, if the family decides to follow the tradition of the letter “B” in English.
