Apple adds dual screen tools to iPhone Duo for October launch
Apple plans to release the iPhone Duo in October as the company prepares its first flexible smartphone to alter the hardware lineup and modify core elements of the iOS platform. Engineers built dedicated operating features for this folding design while retaining standard system navigation across the device.
The updated interface allows owners to run two applications simultaneously on the active display area. Apple also integrated native stylus support for the Apple Pencil directly into the folding screen. Standard mobile phones from the company lack both of these software capabilities.
Multitasking interface and revised display layout
While earlier iterations of iOS restricted multitasking by keeping background applications paused since the rollout of iOS 4, this foldable platform redesigns internal execution to allow two programs to operate side by side without relying on floating Stage Manager windows. The company modeled this split configuration after the iPad experience and confined the side-by-side view strictly to the internal flexible panel.
Users can view the standard home screen on one half of the panel while running an active application on the opposite side. This layout lets owners launch and switch secondary programs across the expanded surface without closing current tasks. The arrangement maximizes the usable workspace of the unfolded interior display on the iPhone Duo.
The system repositions the traditional status bar indicators from the top margin directly to the right vertical edge of the panel. Cellular signal bars, Wi-Fi connectivity icons, and battery percentages sit together along that same right edge alongside the relocated Dock and Dynamic Island.
Folding the chassis halfway triggers hinge sensors that automatically transfer keyboard inputs and interactive controls to the lower half while keeping video playback centered on the top panel. This mechanical adjustment moves tactile elements away from the central crease during active use. The phone serves as desk clock.
External screen camera tools and automated capture
The exterior display architecture supports dedicated camera functions designed specifically for the unique physical orientation of the iPhone Duo. A feature called Smart Take uses artificial intelligence to capture photographs automatically when subjects strike recognized body poses, eliminating the need for physical shutter buttons or manual timers.
The Kid Cue function shows Snoopy character animations on the outer screen to capture the attention of children during photo sessions, resembling the Made You Look utility on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Video calls conducted through FaceTime can also stream live footage from both the front and rear cameras at the same time. The exterior screen functions as an active preview monitor for framing high-resolution shots with the primary lenses.
The iPhone Duo omits the manual camera dials and variable aperture lenses found on the iPhone 18 Pro.
