On June 8, 2025, Microsoft, in collaboration with Asus, announced the launch of two groundbreaking handheld gaming devices, the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, designed to redefine portable gaming with a full-screen Xbox experience on Windows 11. Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, these devices integrate the best of Xbox and Windows ecosystems, offering streamlined navigation, improved power efficiency, and compatibility with games across platforms like Steam. Aimed at competing with Valve’s SteamOS, the devices are set to hit the market by late 2025, marking a pivotal step in Microsoft’s strategy to dominate the handheld gaming sector. The announcement addresses the growing demand for compact, high-performance gaming devices that deliver console-like experiences while retaining PC versatility.

The initiative, codenamed Project Kennan, focused on simplifying Windows for handheld devices. By centering the experience around the Xbox app and Game Bar, the devices boot directly into a gaming-focused interface, bypassing the traditional Windows desktop. This approach ensures a fluid, console-like experience while preserving the flexibility of a PC. The ROG Xbox Ally targets 720p gaming, while the Xbox Ally X, a more powerful variant, supports 900p to 1080p, both featuring 7-inch 1080p displays with 120 Hz refresh rates and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for superior visuals.

Microsoft emphasized energy efficiency, addressing a key pain point for Windows-based handhelds. The devices consume significantly less power in idle mode, and system optimizations free up to 2 GB of memory for games. These advancements, combined with robust hardware, position the Xbox Ally as a strong contender in the handheld market.

  • Key features announced:
    • Full-screen interface that hides the Windows desktop.
    • Support for games from multiple platforms, including Steam and Game Pass.
    • Optimized Game Bar for controller-based navigation.
    • Up to 2 GB of memory freed for gaming performance.
    • Idle mode power consumption reduced by up to two-thirds.

Countering the Steam Deck’s dominance

The handheld gaming market has seen rapid growth since the Steam Deck’s debut in 2022, with Valve’s SteamOS setting a high bar for simplicity and performance. However, SteamOS’s limitation to Steam games created an opportunity for Microsoft to leverage Windows’ versatility. The Xbox Ally represents a bold response, building on years of refinements to the Xbox app and Game Bar.

Teams with over two decades of Xbox OS experience collaborated to reengineer Windows for handhelds. The result is an interface that prioritizes gaming, minimizing distractions like notifications and optimizing controller-based navigation. Unlike previous Windows-based handhelds, which struggled with clunky interfaces, the Xbox Ally offers a streamlined experience tailored to portable gaming.

Technical specifications spotlight

The ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X cater to different gaming needs. The base model, ROG Xbox Ally, features an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM, and a 512 GB M.2 2280 SSD. The premium Xbox Ally X boasts an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. Both models include 7-inch 1080p displays with 120 Hz and VRR, ensuring crisp visuals and smooth gameplay.

Power efficiency was a priority. The ROG Xbox Ally has a 60 Wh battery, 50% larger than the original ROG Ally, while the Xbox Ally X features an 80 Wh battery, the largest in the handheld category. System-level optimizations reduce fan noise and extend battery life, enabling longer gaming sessions without performance trade-offs.

  • Specification comparison:
    • ROG Xbox Ally: AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, 60 Wh battery, 670 g.
    • Xbox Ally X: AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 80 Wh battery, 715 g.
    • Both with 7-inch 1080p, 120 Hz, VRR displays.

Controller-friendly interface

The revamped Game Bar serves as the heart of the Xbox Ally’s interface. A short press of the Xbox button opens a hub for accessing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Asus’ Command Center, and the new Gaming Copilot, an AI-powered assistant. A long press activates a controller-friendly task switcher, allowing seamless transitions between apps and games. These features eliminate the need for touchscreen navigation in most scenarios, addressing a common complaint about Windows handhelds.

The Windows lock screen has also been overhauled, enabling controller-based PIN entry for quick logins. These changes reflect Microsoft’s commitment to making Windows intuitive for handheld users, particularly those relying on physical controls.

Power efficiency and performance gains

Energy efficiency sets the Xbox Ally apart. In idle mode, the devices use up to one-third the power of a standard Windows desktop setup, according to Microsoft’s early tests. By disabling unnecessary processes like desktop wallpapers and taskbars, the system frees up to 2 GB of RAM, boosting game performance. These optimizations are especially critical for demanding titles that push handheld hardware to its limits.

The AMD partnership played a key role. The Ryzen Z2 A, used in the ROG Xbox Ally, leverages the efficient Van Gogh architecture, while the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme in the Xbox Ally X combines high performance with power savings. These chips ensure the devices deliver robust gaming experiences without draining the battery prematurely.

Cross-platform compatibility

Unlike the Steam Deck, which is optimized for Steam, the Xbox Ally supports a wide range of platforms, including Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games, GOG, and more. The Xbox app’s library aggregates all installed games, distinguishing between local and cloud-based titles. This flexibility is a major draw for gamers with collections spread across multiple stores.

The full-screen interface reduces interruptions by minimizing notifications and pop-ups. Users can still access the full Windows desktop when needed, preserving the operating system’s versatility for non-gaming tasks.

Design and ergonomics

The Xbox Ally’s design draws inspiration from Xbox controllers, featuring contoured grips and a layout optimized for comfort. Asus refined the ergonomics from earlier ROG Ally models, adding textured grips and tweaking button placement. While slightly heavier—670 g for the ROG Xbox Ally and 715 g for the Xbox Ally X—the devices are well-balanced for extended play.

The 7-inch display, though smaller than the Nintendo Switch 2 (7.9 inches) or Steam Deck OLED (7.4 inches), delivers high-quality visuals with 1080p resolution and VRR support. The compact size enhances portability without compromising immersion.

Availability and future plans

The Xbox Ally devices will launch in late 2025, with Asus handling distribution. Microsoft plans to extend the full-screen interface and power optimizations to other handhelds, such as the Lenovo Legion Go, starting in 2026. Feedback from early adopters will shape future updates, with notification reduction and navigation enhancements already in the pipeline.

The handheld market, which saw 1.5 million units shipped in 2024, is poised for further growth. Microsoft’s investment in software and hardware positions the Xbox Ally as a key player in this expanding segment.

Gaming Copilot integration

The Gaming Copilot, unveiled alongside the devices, introduces AI-driven assistance. Accessible via the Game Bar, it helps players resume games, master mechanics, or improve in competitive titles. Initially available on Xbox mobile apps, it will roll out to handhelds at launch. More details are expected at GDC 2025, highlighting Microsoft’s focus on innovative gaming tools.

Competitive landscape

The handheld market is fiercely competitive, with the Steam Deck excelling in simplicity and the Nintendo Switch 2 dominating with exclusives. The Xbox Ally stands out by combining Windows’ versatility with Xbox’s gaming ecosystem, including Game Pass and cloud streaming. Asus’ expertise in gaming hardware further strengthens its appeal.

  • Key competitors:
    • Steam Deck: Streamlined interface, Steam-exclusive.
    • Nintendo Switch 2: Exclusive games, limited versatility.
    • Lenovo Legion Go: Powerful hardware, less optimized software.

Launch anticipation

The Xbox Ally has generated significant buzz among gamers and industry analysts. Its promise of a console-like experience on Windows, paired with robust hardware and cross-platform support, makes it a compelling option. While pricing remains undisclosed, the focus on efficiency and compatibility suggests a competitive approach.

Upcoming events will feature hands-on demos, and Microsoft is committed to refining the software based on user feedback. The Xbox Ally is poised to reshape the handheld gaming landscape, offering a unique blend of power and accessibility.
