New asteroid follows Earth’s orbit in sync with the Sun
An asteroid discovered in Hawaii, called 2025 PN7, has been following the Earth’s orbit around the Sun for about 60 years, astronomers revealed. Detected by the Pan-STARRS telescope, on the Haleakalā volcano, the celestial body follows the same orbital rhythm as the planet, creating the illusion of a natural satellite. Despite being nicknamed “almost-moon” on social media, the asteroid does not orbit the Earth, but maintains a trajectory synchronized with it. The discovery reinforces the study of objects close to the planet and their gravitational interactions.
2025 PN7 will remain nearby until at least 2083, according to simulations. It approaches 4 million kilometers from Earth and moves away up to 18 million kilometers.
